Wake Forest Football / Military Bowl Thread

Well I missed the entire first half due to cable outage. Now that I watched us hold them off in a lame second half, it'll be awesome to watch the first half tomorrow.

You're in for some fun

Quick question deac fans. Did you guys run that tempo offense at all this year or was it a new wrinkle you put in for today? It was very effective and I assume you'll use more of it next year.

Was at the game. Incredible energy by the WF fans...more than any time during the regular season. Coach Claw gave a huge thanks to all the Deacs who made the trip. Brown was the MVP...great stat line.

Got to give props to John Armstrong and special teams. The 80 kickoff return at the end of the fourth quarter was a gut punch to Temple and gave every Deacon fan a big lift. They came up huge when the team needed a big play.

Great way to finish a season.

Just reviewing the stats
Temple had -20 yds rushing for the whole game.
Have we ever held a team to negative yds for a whole game?

Awesome defense.

The front end of our defense is very good, the back end is suspect, but we got some good young talent back there too. Jessie Bates is on course to be a stud and I think Amari Henderson and Dionte Austin can be good. Losing Banks and Lee will hurt, but I think we've got some guys that can help to fill their shoes. The play of Jaboree Williams has encouraged me this year, that he can step up to help fill the void Lee will leave. I really hope Zeek Rodney comes back, if he does we could actually be pretty deep on the interior d-line next year.

This is a surprise. Alamance sticking up for Alamance.

Hope. Newman ends up being good. He has a long way to go.

Admittedly a very small sample, but I saw Newman in a playoff game his junior year and was disappointed with his accuracy, in fact would guess he was maybe 4-20. However, he also played linebacker showed a lot of athleticism. His high school teams were pretty bad, and usually an elite QB at that level can make up for a lot of deficiencies around him. Did anyone see him play this year and see the upside that I missed? IIRC NCSU made him an offer; any other P5's?

Going conservative and relying on our defense was frustrating to watch, but a smart strategy with a green backup QB. If our offense puts up 30+ points, we should win the game, and we won the game.

I would hope that after another year of high school, one year of being in our program, spring ball and camps, etc., his skills as a QB will have improved greatly by next fall.

I'm not sure how smart it was. We needed either a defense or special teams score to win with that strategy. We effectively got it with the long KR, but it was a frightening way to play.

That FG gave us the breathing room that we couldn't lose in regulation, but they still had to put the ball in the EZ to win the game, and they didn't come close to doing that their last drive.

Opening it up with Kearns you risk a play blowing up and giving them a huge momentum swing.

Obviously we won, but they were moving the ball with ease in the 2nd half. We essentially decided to stop playing offense for a good chunk of the 2nd half. I'm just not sold that was a great way to play. But it worked so I'm happy with the result.

I saw him in one of our preseason scrimmages and he moved the team down the field and made one really good TD throw. In fact, I think he covered most of the field in 3 or 4 plays.

His high school teams were very weak. He had little time to throw and maybe one reliable receiver.

Even still, they only had 1 TD in the 2nd half.

We didn't just randomly decide to do that. It was dictated by an injury to our QB.

Only 1 TD in the last 3 quarters...

I still think it's odd that the posts complaining about the conservative offense repeatedly ignore our last real drive. 8 plays, 6 passes. Only one completion. One of the runs went for 10 yards. Throwing behind Serigne into double coverage was a foot away from a disastrous pick 6 like the Louisville game. Still ended up punting.

Kearns has a nice arm, but he's simply not ready for that kind of pressure. The other killer is he can't pull the ball back on those option handoffs apparently - Temple was selling out completely to Carney before the handoffs even happened after the long return - Wolford keeps you honest there by pulling it and running outside. At that point the only weapons we had were on defense - a play like that monster sack was far more likely than Kearns throwing TD passes against one of the best defenses in the country.
