Danny Manning Credibility Watch

Almost all of Carolina's points tonight came from their starters? Why? Because Roy knows who his best players are and f'ing leaves them in the game unless they need breathers. Manning plays whoever, like he thinks that all of his players are great and are interchangeable.

If he doesn't leave Collins and Crawford on the bence in the first half so long, we when this game. They should've come back in when Carolina was up by 5 or 7.

UNC had 58 minutes of play off the bench tonight. They just didn't get much production.

A buddy of mine who is a radio color commentator watched the last 10 minutes and had some observations. He thought we have NCAAT talent but don't do the little things like setting good screens and fighting through screens. He said Wake is a team that thinks it's working on D but it isn't. And we didn't run a single offensive set.

It's stupid to rate the team according only to Kenpom when we have not beat a single good team this year. I don't care if our SOS is high when, again, we haven't beat any good teams.

It's also silly to say that having top 25 talent at an ACC program requires us to have an elite recruiter. Simply not true. It probably requires a better than average recruiter, but not an elite one.

Kenpom is a useful predictive tool, but it is not the goal of the season to maximize the Kenpom ranking. The goal is to win games and play in the post season. Hard to say we are much closer to that goal than we were last year or in year 4 of [Redacted] when what gets you into the tournament is quality wins.

I am glad we aren't getting blown out or losing to extremely subpar teams anymore. Sadly, that is real progress. Is that enough progress for year 3 though?

We should not let him go this year obviously. But standing here in year 3 with 7 losses in 7 games against quality opponents, it is not unreasonable to be concerned. On the upside, he was 10-12 on Feb 6 2014 and then rattled off 11 straight wins to win the CUSA championship and make the tournament. So maybe we will be a late season bloomer. But that also highlights why some of us have had anxiety about this hire from day one.

It's equally silly to ignore Kenpom in evaluating whether we are closer to being the type of program we would all like to be.

Given the talent he took over, turning us into one of the 25 most talented teams in the country, with only two full recruiting seasons, would make Manning an elite recruiter.

We have lost all the games we were supposed to lose and won all the games we were supposed to win. If that trend continues we will likely end up 16-16 depending on our first round ACC opponent.

That's not good enough. At the end of the day Manning needs to win one of these games where we have a 30% chance or better. He's had two chances and we lost both, one in pretty excruciating fashion.

Of our 13 games left, we will be Kenpom favorites in 5, prohibitive underdogs in 5, and slight underdogs in 3 (all on the road).

So basically 5 games explain or variance between a 15-15 (6-12) team and a 20-10 (9-9) team. We are 0 for 2, if we finish 0 for 5 then I'll agree there is cause for concern

That last statement is just false. We ran the double high ball screen at least twice in last 10 minutes. So this guy thinks we have top 40ish talent?

Yeah, the "no offensive set" argument is nonsense. I watched about 8 minutes of the game and saw 3 separate sets.

We need about 2 more players.

Another Key Woods type player is the difference in 2 or 3 losses turning into wins.

Good post.

So if we play our best players as much as Carolina's best players we win? Are our players better than Carolina's?

Yes.

No. That's why we need to play our best players.

My buddy said no offensive plays. We did run sets.

I think that this team has shown, in moments, that it can play good basketball. The problem is that DM has not gotten them to be consistent for a whole game. That is mental. The challenge for the rest of the season is to find a way to get these guys to play for the whole game. Keep up their mental game-- avoid stupid plays and lazy passes. Work the ball-- don't just jack up 3's. Go back an look at the LSU tape. I know LSU is not a great team, but we played for the whole game and stuck to the game plan. It may be that DM's substitutions disrupt the flow of the team, but we still are only playing about 1/2 a game on most nights. Even 3/4 of game with good effort and good ball movement and hustle on defense would translate into wins! It is on DM to demand more of these guys and for them to realize that a game is 40 minutes long and they have to play all of it.

I'm genuinely trying to understand those of you who think Manning isn't making progress (or isn't progressing quick enough).

Answers to those simple questions would help.
