The official LOL Harry Giles thread

In all seriousness, has any team ever had more elite recruits do absolutely nothing than this Duke team? Giles, Bolden, Jeter, etc. Of course the next wave of dumbass big men will flock there to underachieve.

11-7 in the ACC. If Wake finishes those two games, they trade records. Think about that.

duke got one ACC win per Burger Boy on their roster.

Kentucky, dook and Carolina are in the mix for this 5* from Florida. Looked at uk's existing commits. They have 5, 5 stars for next year (looking to add a sixth), including two pgs, who committed a week apart.

Unclear to me how you explain that legally. I guess the idea is join a recruiting boat lift to Lexington and we'll try to hide your flaws long enough to get you into the lottery. Obviously works but treating college like aau seems like a tought way to win a single elimination tournament.

Having better players than the teams you play probably helps you win.

With a sample size like that, who needs more information!

It's only the measuring stick of 300+ teams. That's all.

I think there is a lot of opportunity for schools like Wake (and Virginia, etc) to build a core of 3 year players to make a run over time. Not convinced wholesale turnover of your roster annually is worth the risk.

Three and done is not what I am talking about. Jackson wasn't a lottery pick last year, might not be one this year.

There isn't a coach in the country that would tell the second, third, etc. 5* "no thanks, we're all set".

Last year's UNC team that lost on a buzzer beater had 6 burger boys. Somehow Roy has perfected landing elite recruits that don't leave very early.

Sure. But that is neither a sufficient nor necessary condition. Look at the Zags. One and done leaves gaping holes in the top 25 for deeper, more experienced teams to emerge.
Wake loses Collins but otherwise has the advantage of stability over most of cbb. There is a niche wake can fill.

might be an underachieving recruiter and they all get a lift from committing to UNC

frustrating thing is they're really good college players that don't have nba upside. like marcus paige and joel berry and kennedy meeks were 5 stars but don't really have great nba potential but are college studs.

i honestly think roy has developed a knack for finding guys that are flawed as nba prospects.

K has developed a knack for giving NBA prospects flaws.

ACC stats per 40

Harry Giles: 14.7 pts, 13.9 reb
Marques Bolden: 8.5 pts, 7.1 reb
Doral Moore: 14.8 pts, 10.5 reb

I think that is a harder niche to fill than recruiting 1-2 and done talent. To do it, you have to: 1) recruit guys who don't peak until their Jr/Sr years; 2) have those guys, when then peak, be actually good (as opposed to Devin Thomas or Beejay Anya, for example); 3) convince them to stay at Wake while they aren't good enough to get minutes; and 4) hit enough recruits each year to consistently re-fill the coffers with the types of guys that fit 1-3.

It is a good idea, but I think fairly difficult over the long haul.

Devin Thomas averaged 16/10 last season. Anya averaged under 3/3 this season.

Devin Thomas is exactly the type of player you're talking about.

The winning formula has always been the same. Recruit the best players you can get, develop them, and keep them as long as you can. Rinse. Repeat.

I hate sounding like this, but finishing second in the Giles (or Oden, or Conley) sweepstakes almost as bad as winning the AT&T class. Invest all that energy in hopes of getting guys not long for cbb. Give me the 2017 Deacs over Dennis Smith Jr and dook's 5* bench.
