2017 College Football Coaching Carousel

Can they fire him for cause? If so, he's going to lose out on $5.4 million. Some saying that his trip out to LA to interview Leach was "unauthorized". Who does the AD need authorization from to go interview a coach? The President/Chancellor? That would be absurd.

He's the owner of the Cleveland Browns and the money man in the UT booster club. His brother is the governor and he owns PILOT/Flying J. Just sold part of it to Berkshire Hathaway.

and there's no one you want making football-related decisions more than the truck stop baron owner of the Cleveland Browns

The same Cleveland Browns that have won a total of 15 games over the last 5 seasons, including a sterling record of 0-11 this year?

Yeah, he's the guy I want making decisions about my football team.

Not Currie's fault, and yet because of that crazy fan base he had to take the fall. That sucks.

This has been great schadenfreude in the group texts between my college roommates and I and has let us revive some of the better (awful) Lee Fowler memories we have. Like this!

Too bad [Redacted] didn't have allegations of enabling a child molester in his closet. We could have gotten him run off before his 5 year Reign of Terror began.

I feel bad for Currie. Time to bring him home. He is incredibly well respected in college athletics and would be a homerun replacement for Wellman.

Heard Eric Ainge (former Vol QB) talking about the chaos in Knoxville, and he pinned almost all of the blame on the Haslam family. The family is a piece of work. Jimmy owns the Browns, his brother, Bill, is the governor of TN, and their father James Haslam is the #1 donor to the UT athletic department (the TN practice field is named Haslam field). Could make an argument that the Browns are better run organization than the UT football program, which the Haslams have lorded over for years. BTW, to further demonstrate the incestuous nature of TN football/politics/life Jimmy Haslam's roommate in college at TN was Bob Corker TN Senator.

Really sounded like an impossible situation for Currie, who was among the most respected ADs in the nation based upon his time at Kansas State.

This is on the Haslams. I can confirm, after working in athletics for 2 years at UT, that the Haslams have their hands in every major decision. I've talked to a few people I know in the UT athletic department and they have all said that Currie was the fall guy. Haslam wanted Schiano and they let Currie fall on the sword after the backlash. Fulmer wants the AD role.

Currie lined up Greg Schiano and Mike Leach to coach at UT in the same week.

Meanwhile, LSU still has Ed Orgeron and Florida State is starting its coaching search.

I wouldn't be surprised if Schiano and Leach both get new gigs somewhere while UT hires Tee Fucking Martin.

Bet he's gone by tomorrow afternoon

I was a few days off.
I guessed Monday afternoon. He's gone Friday morning.
Lasted longer than I thought.......but enough time for a few more mis-fires heading out the door

one of those guys is a good choice; the other, not so much

perhaps that wasn't Currie's call

Which one is a bad choice ? The guy who went to bowl games in 6 years out of 7 at Rutgers or the pirate guy ?

In my view, that's good for UGA.

I'm sure the Captain of the titanic was a great guy and it wasn't really his fault that the ship hit that iceberg, but I'm not going to hire him to captain my boat afterward (probably, because he died on the titanic but you get my point.).

Reports are that people inside UT Athletics, including Phil Fulmer were reaching out to prospective candidates and telling them not to come. Wild stuff. I feel bad for Currie here. He tried to hire the boosters' guy, was the fall guy for that, almost hired a great coach, and got canned because that's not who the boosters wanted.
