we re-signed third string C greg van roten

i'm hearing whispers that the good kalil might hang em up this offseason

I'm fine rolling with Larsen and Van Roten for a year and drafting a C later or waiting until next year. Would his retirement free up much cap space?

not sure how retirement plays into the overthecap.com calcs - but i'm guessing it would free up $7-10mm. He's on the books for $9.6mm this upcoming season.

for all the bitching about matt kalil, we can't really cut him this season but he's only $6.9mm against the cap. Mike Adams and Charles Johnson could be cuts - both look like minimal dead money and would save $2.1mm and $3.3mm, respectively, in cap space.

Yeah he's got a 9.5 Cap number for this season.

Depending on when it happens, when roster bonuses are, etc... could free all of it up

So we're at $22mm of cap space now... good Kalil retires, cut CJ and Adams and now we've got ~$36mm

Norwell = $7.7mm (matching Turner's cap number + incentives)
Star = $8mm (guesstimate here)
Gano = $3.5mm (just threw up in my mouth)
Other guys... Dickson, DA, Amini, Larsen, Palardy, Kaelin Clay, Byrd

We should have some money to make a splash at WR or S in FA

Funn enough, Tre Boston is generally considered one of the top FA Safeties available

Gano costs $3M than Bukter. GMan’s last pick for the Panthers may have one of his best.

I like Star and all but at that price and with this draft class I think you scoop up a really good DT with that extra 3rd rounder you got and spend that money elsewhere. But that may just be me...

We did kinda draft a DT with a 1st round pick not too long ago presumably for that very reason.

Is Star that much of a priority? I'm fine rolling with a trio of Short, Butler, and Love next year and seeing how that goes. Would rather spend the money on WR, secondary, OL, or DE - probably in that order.

Draft Ejiofor in the 2nd and Bates in the 3rd. Problem solved for the secondary and DE. Unbiased

Great news about Kalil. Gives the new ownership a chance to make their mark on the position. Gives the backups a chance to earn a Kalil's spot. Gives the new GM in 2019 a chance to draft a young C. Maybe gives Lil Kalil a reason to be worth a damn.

i forgot the details but i think we're kind of stuck with the bad kalil for three years

Yep, $20.6M in dead money against the Cap - only hope is to trade him to someone like the Browns or Jets, or for him to become serviceable.

With that kind of money dedicated to LT, it's hard to assume we're going draft one, but that's the only way to get a legit LT for cheap.
