Grading the season

Doral is pretty much on a linear track from his freshman year. His performance last year was the outlier.

Again, this was a freshman who went 19/13 and 13/8 in his only two ACC games with 20 minutes as a rookie.

Do you watch the games? And how can one be on a linear path when one season is okay, the second season sucked and was far worse than the first, and the third season is dramatically better than than the first two.

Of course I do. I was the guy who was saying preseason that there is no reason Doral shouldn't average at least 10 and 8 just based on his athleticism this year while others were talking about project SJM, who doesn't have anywhere close to the physical talent that Doral does, as being our starting center.

A rookie who produces points in rebounds in every spot minute appearance and has stats like that in the two games he got any significant run should be expected to be a consistent producer by his junior year.

RJ, I think you're overrating Crawford's season again. I think most of us at the beginning of the season would have said the season really depends on how Doral plays. Well, we ended up getting a phenomenal season out of Doral. And yet we sucked. Crawford is probably the most enigmatic player we've had in a long time. Even Devin was more consistent than this. When we get an efficient line out of Crawford, we're good. When we get a 7/17, 6+ TO game, we're toast. But I do get that he's really physically talented and has kept us in games at times. However, we're a better team when the ball moves around the horn.

Doral was definitely a key, but even with his great improvement, we had massive holes at two to three positions. You can hide one, but not as many as we had.

Is Mitchell any good other than as a catch and shoot 4? I haven’t really watched much but he seems like a low utilization guy. How are his advanced rebounding numbers? Does he do anything special on defense?

All I said was he could be a good player off the bench.

Thunderbolt- You seemed to miss this - "What saves him from an F is that Doral improved massively in ways that were obviously done by coaching. Donovan also improved a lot."

Not necessarily refuting you - just adding my thoughts where my grade might differ

No worries....

My biggest problem was once the season was over in January is Danny should have played the young guys more and been more consistent with their minutes.

He had 5 rbs in his 24 min yesterday. He's very active and doesn't seem to be sieve on defense. IMO

I don’t know if you call stumbling and falling as something special for a defensive player?
Seems to be wearing shoes that are about three sizes too large.

How about a report card for Wellman?

Wellman learned from his mistakes. He was able to keep the culture club in tact by putting a more likable face on it and then further insulating himself by making sure Childress stayed on staff. We haven't had to hear any of his smug remarks since Manning was hired.

Did we make the NCAA tournament? F

Wellman is an A++ in his own mind and that's all that matters.

The only team worse than us in a 15 team conference was 0-18 Pitt. And we struggled mightily to eek out a W against them late in the season.

F-.

The only question is whether that performance means you repeat the same grade level next year, or get remanded to the special ed / remedial curriculum of the prior grade level.

Generally agree with RJ's grades except for the following. Remember your grade scale ( A- Excellent, B-Good, C-Average, D- below average, F- fail) Sarr was not B. C at best for him. He's young and undeveloped, and played like it. Crawford for me would be a C- for the following reasons, lack of leadership, total inconsistency of play, poor decision-making, terrible lack of game-changing performances. I went back and looked at how many games he was our leading scorer and found that we won less several less games than our season total when he was the scoring leader. That tells me that his performances DID NOT have the game changing effect we sorely needed. No matter what our players did, he didn't make the difference between losing and winning much of the time. That has to be a HUGE disappointment to most of us. Of our entire roster, Crawford was the one player we all thought would make a positive difference. That didn't happen. If anything his stats were irrelevant to our won/lost record as a whole except in his bad games when we generally lost. I would actually have a somewhat similar grade for Woods except that his injury magnified his biggest weakness of average athletic ability, so I'll rate him a C. Our expectations for him were not the same as Crawford, and that turned out to be his impact. Certainly, it's hard to give Manning a good grade because he failed to overcome most all of the team's deficiencies, the sole exception being the development of Doral Moore into a contributor from a question mark. Whether he's the cause of our problems, or our savior isn't clear to me, as I'm convinced we were basically all wrong about expectations for what was clearly a flawed team. I think next season is a clear opportunity to judge Danny Manning. Our roster of returnees is mostly a question mark as far as the players actual ability to make us a winning team. We already know what the returning players will be about. The frosh are a wildcard for the first time since the AFA years. What Manning does next year will be a true measure of his leadership and coaching ability.
