Official Champions League 2017/2018 - New & Improved: Arsenal Free (NWT)

courageous and decent of the ref to admit it publicly

http://www.calciomercato.com/en/news/referee-of-roma-liverpool-admits-we-made-a-mess-27973

“We made a mess”, that’s what Damir Skomina, the referee of Roma-Liverpool is reported to have told his assistants after watching the controversial episodes of the return Champions League semi-final tie played between the Italians and the English at the Olimpico this past Wednesday.

I think even the refs want VAR. UEFA is crazy for not using it in the Champoins League. The excuse that a lot of countries are involved who don't use VAR and there would have to be considerable training is just hollow in light of the fact that the World Cup, with even more countries involved, will be using it. How come UEFA can't train all the refs, when FIFA can?

What is this phantom red card everyone is calling for? The only potential red card I saw was the scissor kick tackle on the sidelines by a Roma player.

I don't think VAR is going to solve anything. MAYBE on a blatant dive or blatant handball, but those will be few and far between. The calls are subjective and watching it from multiple angles on video replay will not clarify anything and probably add more confusion.

I watched it back and the Roma players didn't even really appeal for a handball. It happened so fast and from so close I don't know how it is causing so much grief.

Here is the tackle I was talking about. This is a red card, no?

Roma did get two penalties over two legs for handballs that were pretty generous calls. It's not like every call went against them.

Exactly and with VAR, one of those might have even been called off. The one on Klavan was a bit harsh IMO.

No, it is not a red card. Check out the rules for red cards.

Law 12 of the Laws of the Game lists the categories of misconduct for which a player may be sent off. These are:

Serious foul play
Violent conduct
Spitting at an opponent or any other person
Denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
Deliberate fouls that deny an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player's goal.[5]
Using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures
Receiving a second caution in the same match[1]:39

You might also note that Florenzi has been playing - mostly defense - for eight years for both Roma and the Italian national team and he has never received a red card. Over his career, he has averaged one yellow card roughly every ten games. He has two in Serie A this year.

check out these videos:

The Alexander-Arnold handball clearly fits the definition of a red card offense - his arm is clearly extended inside the penalty area and clearly prevents the ball from going into the net. He should have been sent off, followed by a penalty shot.

Here you can watch it as many times as you like:

A further red card, followed by a penalty shot, may have been handed to Karius for his clear foul on Dzeko Have a look:

Please note: Karius does not touch the ball and clearly mows down Dzeko with no one between Dzeko and the goal.

The ref could have given a red to Karius but I think a yellow and a penalty shot would have sufficed.

they had to score several goals to catch up and so they obviously did not want to waste time, people said as much afterwards

besides, it wouldn't have done any good

I don't understand all these rather misinformed and defensive posts y'all are making. Hell, the refs admitted they made a mess of the game and Klopp admitted that Liverpool had been lucky. No one is blaming Liverpool for the mistakes of the refs. They got most the breaks from the refs and will get to go to the finals. That's often what it takes to get there. That's - at least in part - what Real has been getting for years. That's an important factor in getting there. Why shouldn't Liverpool get there like that? If Roma had gotten most of the breaks from the refs, they would have gotten to the finals. Just be decent enough to admit it and move on.

By the way, I hope Liverpool wins against Real.

I disagree with you about VAR. The current state of officiating is pretty bad, especially in the Premiership. The refs need all the help they can get. Let's see how successful VAR is during the World Cup, which traditionally has some of the worst officiating anywhere.

Speaking of being misinformed, Karius could not have gotten a red card in the situation where there should have been a penalty kick awarded for his foul on Dzeko. https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/goalkeepers-avoid-red-cards-football-7934400

Like I said, I did not think that Karius should get a red card, but since the call depended on the refs judgment of Karius' intent, he could have gotten one. From your article:

It means as long as referees can see that keepers have made a genuine attempt to go for the ball then denying strikers an obvious goalscoring opportunity will now only result in a yellow card.

Fouls committed outside the box or obvious professional fouls in the penalty area will still result in a red card but the key is whether players make a genuine attempt.

If you are going to be forgiving about the mistakes that the ref makes in favor of Liverpool, which some around here are determined to do, then it seems a little odd not to be forgiving if the ref should make an error of judgment concerning intent.

The rule doesn’t specifically say “two footed scissor tackle from behind” but yeah, that is a red card. Also, I love that you went with the “he’s not that type of player” defense.

Roma conceded 7 goals over two legs. Stop your fucking bitching. Jesus Christ. You're acting like a petulant child.

And I HATE Liverpool.

Actually only six goals, the third so-called Liverpool goal in game one was clearly offside. See for yourself:

the same number Roma kicked into Liverpool's net (without help from the officials).
