For the Californians/those who visit regularly - did you change how you tip when servers started getting paid minimum wage?

DC is going to vote this month on whether to apply minimum wage to restaurant workers and the opposition says that no one will tip if it passed.

We were just talking about this at dinner tonight. I’ve heard very passionate arguments on both sides and I’m honestly not sure how I’m going to vote yet.

Can you summarize the arguments?

There's no one I know that doesn't tip because servers get paid minimum wage. I've never even once heard the idea discussed or brought up until reading this post. Half the restaurants in LA don't pay minimum wage anyways.

Even if people stopped tipping, restaurants could just charge gratuity.

One side says servers should get paid minimum wage plus tips. The opposition says that no one will tip if it passed.

You know what grinds my gears? Folks who declare 'everyone' or 'no one' or 'all the folks I know' thinks/acts/behaves a certain way. That's no way to win an argument. Looking at you here, opposition.

But people are saying people won’t tip.

So a full time waiter at an expensive restaurant gets a $10K raise with no hit to tips ? Seems like a good deal for the waiter. If the restaurant has to raise menu prices to pay the waiter minimum wage, he also gets tipped on the higher menu prices. It's a win-win for the waiter.

If I knew the waiter was making minimum wage, I might give 5% tops.
