Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

As always ESPN article is definitely going a bit overboard as you can't get technically owned as US did and get a lucky break off an absolute awful touch by French defender that gets Julian Green an opportunity that quite frankly the goalie should have blocked off nearpost and gave us a gift while France missed a lot of gimmes most teams aren't going to miss on. I do believe a lot of the young guys should be given a chance, but need have a the right mix of talent and veterans to build on. Clearly Pulisic, Brooks, Woods, and Yedlin are young starters that are talented with speed and touch and deserve to be on the field. I still think Bradley can contribute and be a great calming and teaching presence on the field along with Geoff Cameron and possibly Fabian Johnson. While he will be one of the older players I wouldn't write off Dempsey if he can stay healthy as there are few players with his fire and abilities to score.

I do think Altidore, J. Jones, Nagbe, Howard in goal, Villafana, Besler, Corona, probably Bedoya and some of the others need to move on and look to the young guns especially on D and midfielders to strengthen our back and holding ability and Steffens appears to be our clear answer in goal going forward. I do think some of the young defenders show a lot of promise and add to that mix Brooks, Cameron, and Yedlin and you could have a fairly stout D. Not sure on Julian as he was invisible and had to depend on a horrible D touch to actually get a scoring opportunity. But have to credit him for getting the score. But still not seeing a lot of creativity/scoring ability upfront that makes it obvious you can depend on young guys.

2022 is a long way away. There will be a couple Gold Cups between now and then, hopefully a Copa America, a Confederations Cup in 2021, and lots of friendlies to get a feel for things. First of all we need a new coach who will develop an identity for US Soccer that's beyond just "works hard". We need more players who have established an identity for themselves that we can build around. based on what we've seen the last few months and what we already know, there are some that stand out now. Pulisic obviously, and for me John Brooks are the two I'd start with. With young players like Brooks, Yedlin, Zimmerman, Miazga, Shaq Moore, Tim Parker and Antonee Robinson the next 4 years could be a breath of fresh air for USMNT defense where we've always felt like we were settling for less then solid players. Steffen is my favorite of the young keepers but there are many in the pool, and 4 years from now is a long time. Midfield again has screamed for change, and with Pulisic leading the young studs like McKennie, Tim Weah, Tyler Adams, Keaton Parker, Wil Trapp and Kellyn Acosta maybe we can be re-made into something finally "new". Up top is the question mark. We all like what Bobby Wood has done, but is he "the player" that opponents fear in attack? Not really. Josh Sargent? Who really knows yet? Julian Green? His two USMNT goals are not nearly enough to qualify him. There's mystery in the striker discussion that hopefully 4 years from now will be solved. What's really exciting is that these 4 years will be a generational change like we haven't seen in a long time. No "hold-overs" past their prime.

It’s crazy that Pulisic will have played professional soccer at the highest levels in the World for six years before his first WC.

good news everyone the U18 basketball team is taking revenge on Panama to the tune of 43-0 after the first quarter

USA, Mexico, and Canada won the bid...Trump will fuck this up somehow.

Lolol Spain. WTF

And yay for World Cup. Looking forward to trying to get a ticket or two

At least we don’t have to qualify.

Do all three nations get autos? Not sure how that will work.
