Ongoing Dem Debacle Thread: Commander will kill us all

Getting rid of Pelosi wouldn’t be an “ideological purge.” It would be forcing a generational change and good strategy.

The right will just make the next person up into the worst thing ever, and it will be effective because the left will let it be effective.

Sure they will. But it won't matter if that person is better at their job than Pelosi is.

Republicans just passed a tax cut that’s going to blow up the debt by almost $2T. They had “economic analysis” that convinced them it would benefit the economy. Nothing Democrats can do will convince them a progressive plan will fit in the budget and Republicans will do whatever they can to make sure it doesn’t work.

So we should rely on....#feelings?

No. We should rely on #analysis, but realize that it's not going to matter because #feelings.

Democrats like ChrisL just want the continuity that comes along with monarchy.

Win more elections. I know, when moderates win it's only because of money. When leftists win occasionally it is because of their superior ideas.

within the party, your ilk does control everything
I dont think thats fair. The party apparatus is controlled by the wealthiest donor networks, and the beauracracy they have installed. I doubt any Democrat on this board is wealthy enough to have that much influence.

The only real responsibilty you could attach to a fellow poster here is...passive naivity in believing that Democrat party's moderation is a strategic campaign choice, and not simply the preferrence of corporations and millionaires who prefer the economic status quo.

I saw a research article recently that showed the DCC & DNC often preferred the moderate candidate in safe races, controlling for incumbents. The rate of preferrence for moderate canfidates was even slightly higher in safe races than in close partisan contests.

Of course a lot of that is explained by the fact that the self-funded candidates with wealthy backing are generally the less progressive candidates. It's a cylical problem - if politics requires big money campaigns, then you're only going to get idealogy of the wealthy in politics.

maybe, maybe it's a fear of the general election. the party has lacked a core message for a long time and playing a prevent defense with mediocre candidates has clearly been a losing proposition. also, the complete failure to mobilize state and local elections might be the bigger disaster

not just money

if you don't think that the moderate wing of the Democratic Party hasn't consolidated power and shaped elections to their benefit over the past several decades, then we're just not going to agree. here in Chicago and Illinois, it's particularly corrupt and bad, but plays out on the national level too. do you earnestly believe that the DNC didn't do it's damndest to get HRC nominated?

there are a lot of procedural moves by party leadership to control which candidates have a viable shot

money does matter a lot too

I agree completely. One of the dumbest things Democrats have done, imo, is to largely ignore party candidates at the state and local levels. Many Democrats, starting with Bill Clinton's Administration, I think, seem to believe that as long as they hold the presidency everything is fine, even if the party takes a beating elsewhere. Much of the damage caused by right-wingers has happened at the state level, in places like NC, Wisconsin, Kansas, etc. To their credit, the GOP began an organized, concerted effort to take over state legislatures and governorships a decade ago, and it has been very fruitful for them. They even created a right-wing think tank, ALEC, to write right-wing bills and proposals that state legislatures across the country could enact into laws when they won the majority. The Democrats really need to build up a bench at the state and national levels, and they can start by running better candidates, funding them, and focusing more on taking back statehouses and state legislatures. They've definitely dug themselves in a hole, that's for sure.

Anti-IDC candidates emboldened by shocking upset in Queens

New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer backs Ramos and Robert Jackson, who is challenging ex-IDC Sen. Marisol Alcantara. He announced Wednesday he would also support Alessandra Biaggi's bid to unseat the IDC's former founder and leader, Sen. Jeff Klein, whose Bronx district overlaps with NY-14.

The district of the founder of the IDC, a group of Dems in the NY state senate that caucused with the Republicans, overlaps with the Ocasio-Cortez's congressional district.

(New York has a separate primary in September for state races.)

can we do this? France is bringing back mandatory national service for all 16-year-olds

probably not because all our kids are slaves to testing prep and dumb year-round sports teams

If we did it, this being America, we would figure out a way to exempt all the kids whose parents make more than $100,000 a year so the test prep would be fine. Nike and Adidas would probably find a way to get "amateur" sports teams grandfathered in as a form of "national service". Also, the whole thing will either be subcontracted to the private prison people or they will hire Lockheed Martin to design the program for a bazillion dollars, plus cost overruns and martini lunches.
