Jamie Newman Fan Club (No more Seinfield references, we've reached our limit)

If Hartman wants to redshirt, he could play in four games next year, backup for one more year and start for two seasons. We seem to forget that most QBs only start for 2 maybe 3 years. I think Clawson would love to get to that point.

What makes anyone believe Hartman wants to redshirt - nobody wants to redshirt. They do it when they have been beat out of a position and don't want to waste a year of eligibility playing sparingly.

Think about it from Sam's perspective - if he loses the competition next fall. He can redshirt a year (assuming Jamie doesn't get hurt) and watch Jamie start Sam's redshirt and sophomore years, then play his last 2 years. Or, he can transfer and sit out a redshirt year and then play for 3 years somewhere else. Neither scenario has any guarantees, but most QBs will transfer in that spot. We will see what Sam does, if he loses the competition.

From Jamie's perspective, if he loses the competition, he knows he will likely sit behind Sam his junior and senior years, so he will likely transfer and sit out, so he can play his senior year somewhere else.

We have 2 QBs who have proven they can play (i.e. put it on tape), so they will be attractive transfers. You just can't keep 2 QBs happy, because only one gets to play when it really matters.

Newman is our QB . end of story. Practice is shit. Went on the road and beat two in state rivals favored to beat us. Big and durable. Not a close call.

Agreed. Newman has to be the QB going forward if healthy. And if that’s a problem for Hartman he can transfer out. His skill set, like Wolford’s, is a dime a dozen. Hopefully he’ll be ready to shine after spending 3+ years in the program.

in my opinion, the biggest difference between Newman and Hartman, outside of size, is Newman's willingness to stay in the pocket

It does seem doubtful, though, that Hartman would have the personality that would want to sit for basically 2 full seasons before starting again.

Agreed,if he did transfer our back-up would be Kern the freshman who is nowhere near ready for college ball. Hopefully they both stay put regardless of who wins the position, and I really don't care who does start.

Depends on his goals. Can’t see him being a guaranteed starter at an FBS school in the next year or two. Could maybe drop down to FCS and start there. He wasn’t a very highly recruited QB. I bet he stays, takes the shirt, puts on some weight and prepares to dominate as a JR and SR.

Like freshman QBs not at Wake do all the time.

Yep. I don’t know why everyone wants these freshmen scrimps to be 4 year starters. Let em’ grow into the job.

Wolford probably lost 20 years off of his life taking the kinds of hits that Sam took this season for his first 2-3 seasons at Wake. I understand pride, but it was pretty clear that Hartman was not physically suited for the ACC this year and it's hard to imagine that changing next year. Take the time to put in the work and come back capable of weathering ACC-caliber hits.

Right. Wake fans have gotten too used to this. There's nothing wrong with a guy coming in, getting his academics together, hitting the weights, learning the position, and then stepping on the field after a few seasons. Newman is an example of what happens. He redshirted and was on the sidelines behind a starter. He got stronger. He got healthy. And when it was time for him to play, he played well.

What the fans think is immaterial to what the players think, when Hartman or Newman loses out as starter, (barring injury to one of them) I would be willing to bet one of them leaves. I hope they wouldn't but QB's by nature are very competitive and want to play if they are any good.

It's a breath of fresh air watching Clawson build this program.

This. As much as our basketball team sucks, I have loved watching our football program develop. Never in all of my years as a Wake fan did I think such an inversion of fates was possible.

NFW. You need to understand that Cade, Sam, the LB Chase Monroe and Groulx all grew up together and played on the same high school team. Sam isn't going anywhere.
