KP Report -- NC State Wolfpack - 8 pm Tuesday (Uh oh) Raycom

Most aggressive that I have ever seen Sarr. Even so, still has along ways to go on the boards and defensively.

Cringed when Johnson entered the game late when WF had a point lead. Astonished when he scored the game's final 4 points for WF. Kudos to Torry.

Great win for the Deacs! Played aggressively throughout the game even during their comeback attempt. Switched up some positions, played some zone and played defense. Proud of these guys beating the Wuffies!

I cringed as well. But I believe that the final possessions were drawn up for Johnson. I don't believe that it just worked out that he took the last shots. I believe that that was the design. I also think that that is a reflection of the value Manning places on experience especially in the crunch. I was hoping we would go to Hoard because he can do so much more than any other player and is a good free throw shooter. But DM predictably wants the more experienced players to have the ball at the end of the game. At least, that is how I interpret his philosophy.

If the design was for Tory to shoot, it worked and it caught State by surprise. If, given his play thus far, Johnson took it on himself to take the final shots...he should be benched.

Johnson could actually be a decent player if he would just focus on pull-ups in the 8 to 15 foot range and the occasional wide open three. As others have stated before, he gets himself in trouble when he tries to do too much and over-penetrates. I will say this, if you have to put one guy from this team on the FT line with the game on the line, he is the guy I pick. The two he made toward the end of the game last night were as pure as you can get.

We have some real talent. Its a shame we don’t have moore and Crawford and it’s a shame we don’t have the coaching chops because the talent is there (and would especially be there without our departures).

Hopefully that will make us a more attractive landing spot for a up and coming coach.

With Neath and Massoud coming in, also White eligible, the next coach adds 2 grad transfer bigs and the next coach has solid parts to work with.

Doral Moore would make a huge difference on this team. Until last night, opponents scored inside on WF at will. Having a 7-1 shot blocking presence would've changed all of that. On the offensive side, Moore was automatic when he got the ball in the paint, and Hoard can pass. Would've been fun to watch.

Crawford as a sophomore would've made a huge difference too, but BC didn't want to play for WF last year, and his play reflected that. Regardless of how talented he was, no team can be successful if the PG doesn't give a s***.

what about BC as a freshmen...oh wait very similar to last years version. amazing how good an avg player can look when all you have to do is dump the ball down low to get 5 assists a game. danny wasnt only one that benefitted from mr collins

One definition of a great player is someone who makes everyone around him better. Collins looking better and better as a fit for that descriptor.

Did this come directly from bigboy8's source inside the program ??!!?

Can someone give a guess as to why the assistant coaches were all of a sudden so animated last night? Nestor jumped out of his seat a few times, and, Randolph, wow—I literally have never seen him say a word for 9 years until last night, and he was so animated. (Danny.. still not so much) My first assumption was they got wind that their jobs were actually (finally) on the line. And if that was what happened, how could it possibly take Randolph 9 years to light a fire under him?

So so excited for another coaching staff, top to bottom.

I noticed that too. It was really strange. Randolph on the bench actually looked a little like the competitor he was on the court last night. It's about high time, but too late.

For those that watched the whole game and prior ACC games (i.e. the masochists among us), did Wake run a different defense that actually made it hard for the opponent to get easy buckets or was the much improved result primarily due to State missing easy shots/not having their point guard?

It was a mix of 2-3 zone but also a lot of 1-2-2 zone, which we haven't seen this year. Many times Wake used the 1-2-2 like a full/half court press and collapsed it back into the set zone. It took us 15 games to realize that M2M defense on this squad is NOT going to work. I particularly liked seeing Hoard at the 5 when State had small lineups. If Wake can lock down State like they did last night they can run with almost any team.
Smart is always aggressive on the boards, but Sarr was much more so last night as well. There was serious scrapping for the ball on every possession.

Consequently, State's run occurred when 1) at least 3 of our starters were on the bench and 2) we allowed the short white guy to get open.

After we started the game with like 4 turnovers I expected the worst/usual, but then our defense started creating offense for us, hence the huge run. Novel idea.

And for all the idiot State fans blaming the refs: its not the ref's fault that State kept deferring to outside shots all night. Hard to rack up fouls on those.

Any defense looks great when the opponent is 1 -15 on 3's. Once they got going they erased a 22 point lead in 6+ minutes. Where was the defense then? Layup after layup then several 3's in a row they knifed through us as if we weren't there. The only thing I'm proud of is we did not fold when we very well could/should have.

Agree that 3 point defense depends at least to some degree on luck.

OTOH, 2 point% defense is generally a more reliable gauge of the effectiveness (or not) of a defense. Going into the State game, WF was surrendering an unbelievably horrendous 68% on opponents 2 point shots in WF's ACC games. By far the worst of any Power 6 team, and reflective of how bad WF's defense had been.

Last night, WF held State to 47.7% on their 2 point field goals (State has averaged 56% on 2 PT shots on the season). While not UVA-level lockdown pack-line defense, WF did make a concerted effort to challenge State's shots in the paint which was an improvement.

He went further and cracked a joke about showing his age by calling it a Big Four win.

Did you notice during the post game presser or did you have to go back and look at the tape? Apparently things look different on tape then they do in real time.
