Possible Wake Forest Coaching Candidates Analysis

So some fans think Wes doesn't have enough experience/qualifications and others are pointing out he should've been hired 10 years ago (when he was 26 years old).

Gotta love it.

Duke, who’s been grooming assistant coaches to become head coaches all over the country for a couple of decades, is going to choose as K’s successor a mid-tier UNCG coach who played at UNC and whose family donated to Wake? How do these statements get passed as fact on these boards?

Maybe a few Duke fans think that, but is donaldross saying that the Duke administration would consider Miller? Because... there’s no way.

I think the drum beat for Wes started closer to 2012 than 2009, but regardless, I think Wes would be a good hire in 2019.

Don't have a dog in this fight but I would prefer we adopt the strategy to hire young coaches who may lack "experience" but show potential over safe choices with a ceiling of mediocrity. Just keep trying until we find the guy. It's a joke to think that we are going to hire a guy who has already proven he's capable of winning championships. Such a coach will not come to Wake. (As should be apparent from our last decade. Bz and DM were not high on anyone's lists.)

Also, it's hilarious to read posts now that we don't have time to spare from the same posters who argued to give Bz and DM time. I am not a basketball genius but it was glaringly obvious those were terrible hires. Some of us said so from the beginning and were proven right. I would argue now all we have is time. There is nowhere to go and no reason to hurry. Now's the time to start gambling until we strike gold.

Yeah but I think he’s won COY the year before as an interm coach.

Yep went from 2-8 to 13-19 (he went 11-11 overall that season and 10-8 in the SoCon). Not intending to discredit him because I also believe he is the best choice for us to hire right now, but when he took over the team was ranked around 300th in KP and they finished 280. They improved their win total comparatively because they got into the easy conference season.

If we had hired HOF Wes ten years ago, he would have been fired by now. He was 45-73 for his first four years at UNC-G. He wouldn't have gotten a fifth year.

BTW, ten years ago HOF Wes hadn't even been an assistant anywhere yet. In what world would he have ever gotten a HC job at a P6 school?

completely missed the point. A decade ago, we could have gone after some big name coaches and landed one. We aren't in a position to do so any more. The brand sucks and we are in an ACC much tougher than it was 10 years ago - a point many on here seem to miss. Wake is arguably the worst job in the league when a decade ago we were behind Duke and Unc and not far behind Maryland. I wouldn't have advocated for Miller a decade ago, but he sure as hell would have given us more results than what we've gotten and at minimum energized the fan base. I have 0 faith Ron Wellman will make the right hire this time around, but he has two young, good coaches with strong ties to the program in Kelsey and Miller that he could easily tap for the job. Instead, I'm sure he will outsmart everyone and hire Jim Crews.

Wes Miller also hired Jackie Manuel as his assistant coach, who graduated with his no-show class African-American studies degree from UNCheat. Wellman won't look at anyone with a potentially stained past, so are we going to hire a guy whose assistants graduated UNC during the biggest academic scandal in NCAA basketball history? If he does, he is giving preferential treatment Wes would not be getting, but for his father's relationship with Wake Forest.

No I appreciate the insight. Your article on Wes Miller was the discussion at the dinner table today. My wife and mother in law are both G grads.

Thanks - Doofus did a great job there. And I don't want it to come across like I'm against Miller at all because I believe he would be a great hire, just wanted to get the information out there.

Just so we’re clear. I’m saying precisely that.

one other point - between Dave Odom (who still runs Maui tournament), Gaudio, Mack, even [Redacted] - they have a vast connection to many D1 head coaches. When a potential candidate calls on them to ask what it's like working for Wellman, the reviews are not going to be kind. Our Board of Trustees, who seemingly has no clue how Division 1 Athletics works, won't understand this, but top candidates are going to reach out to our past coaches to ask what it's like working for Wellman. Until he's gone, that's also going to really hurt us with top tier coaches who might otherwise consider the job.

Spot on post of entire thread and why we got stuck with DM this last go round.

Perfect opportunity for ronnie for force Childress or gray as an assistant!

None of us has any faith in Wellman. However, a good coach could the program around in 2-3 years and never look back at this decade.

Wes Miller could bring back Wake Bball and be the face of Wake for the next 30 years. Could be a legend around these parts.
