Totally Unofficial 2018/19 Premier League Thread (NWT)

I'd like to report a mass murder in Manchester

Spurs somehow keep getting 3 points. Don't ask me. Lester always a scary game. Can't believe we're still keeping pace.

Also, Son with 10 goals and 5 assists in his last 11 appearances. Never leave.

Really like the team Spurs have assembled. Surprised with the injuries to very key players they are keeping up. 5 back and even on GP with the Pool. They are not out of it yet for sure. If they can keep the pace then March 31st looms very large Spurs at Liverpool.

This guy is a City fan, but I liked this piece about his thoughts on Liverpool the last two years.

https://www.whatahowler.com/jurgen-klopp-agent-of-chaos/

Agree with him that City’s early loss in the CL, inability to clinch the premier league at old trafford, and no fa cup made last season seem disappointing even though it was one of the all time great premier league seasons.

But not with him that klopp is the future of football. Let’s see Liverpool win the league and back up last years CL with another deep run - even if they don’t win it all. And that’s not hating on Liverpool - just need to see more before we anoint klopp.

I dunno, UCL final then pushing Citeh's limitless oil finances in the league the next season is a hell of an accomplishment, for a club that while wealthy doesn't have an endless stream of money

Damn, expected goals in Spurs/Leicester were 3.12 to 1.08 in favor of Leicester per the BBC. Missed pen obvs a big part of that but still.

Spurs living a charmed life at the mo

Were definitely fortunate today (though we should have been awarded a pen and Leicester's was crap). Leicester left a lot of chances on the table.

"Expected goals" is making a run at most overrated soccer stat, although its gonna be hard to knock "Possession %" from its vaulted perch.

Speaking of Little Marco won the possession % stat again on Saturday, but lost again! What a man! (I hate him so much, his soccer is so boring, Sam was better)

Expected Goals is fun to view on a game by game basis, but only really useful for analysis over longer term. It is much better than possession %, though. I like Michael Caley's viz for the games, because it does give you some idea, but the comments he will often add don't help him all that much, because it's pretty clear he hasn't watched the game. Although, he will at least clarify when there is a penalty. I don't know, I view it more as a fun approximation/visualization of the match and think it has some value, but I hear you.

It definitely tells a story, if not a complete one, and can provide insight. And it represents evolution in soccer stats, which will hopefully lead is away from possession percentage etc. The key is to glean what info you can and not pretend it's something it's not.

xG is a pretty valuable indicator for coaches. Take, for example, Berhalter's quotes after the Costa Rica match:

If you look at shot maps after a game with your players you can talk about increasing expected goals based on shot quality. That's a good use.

You can also scout whether teams are running hot or cold compared to xG to model how they may do with the remainder of the season. It's got pretty good predictive value in that way.

It has limitations in that it isn't a pure counting stat, but it addresses lots of the limitations of actual shot numbers or SOT numbers.

^ Fair enough y'all, Its just all of sudden become the talking point de jour in too many soccer podcasts and articles.

Townie what's your opinion on Little Marco? I'm more interested in hearing that.

The fact that he can’t get two consistent performances out of the team is awful. But I think the roster is toxic. Need a mass exodus.

Our best XI is probably

Pickford
Kenny-Keane-Zouma-Digne
Davies-Gana-Gomes
Lookman-DCL-Richarlison

Sigurdsson, Bernard, Mina, Baningime, Vlasic worth keeping around.

The rest can go:

Holgate, Baines, Jags, Bolasie, Sandro, Walcott, Tosun, Martina, McCarthy, Schneiderlin, Niasse, Besic, Stekelenburg, Coleman, Mirallas, Williams.

That’s so much dead weight. I’d be fine getting rid of Marco and going for Arteta. He’s gotten Pep tutelage, he’s a club legend. Give Brands a lot of power, let him unload the ridiculous roster bloat, and get some more young talent in. I have a hard time getting too upset week to week given what a hole we’ve dug ourselves into with the last few recruitment periods.

Something I was thinking about this weekend watching that excellent Spurs-Leicester match was how I’d trade our roster for Leicester’s roster in a heartbeat. Their recruitment has been terrific. I feel like Maddison, Ricardo, Tielemans, Chilwell, Ndidi, Maguire, and Gray could all be on top 4 teams. Shame they have such a dud manager. He can’t seem to figure out how to put that young team together every week.
