Hoard's mental absence says it all about the state of NCAA basketball and the depths of depression for WF basketball.
"The atmosphere here was blue. That can stand as ample description for the 60-to-70 percent of the crowd here to see North Carolina (20-5, 10-2). It’s also something of a descriptor for the sad, accepting and apathetic nature of Wake Forest’s fan base." writes Connor O'Neil in the Winston-Salem Journal.
Fundamental question about Wake Forest fans who typically have a long "to do" list on a Saturday is: How did the fans become so apathetic?
A couple suggestions for the "accepting nature of Wake Forest's fan base":
1. Clearly, the team has quit on DM.
2. DM cannot lead this age group in 2019.
3. DM's contract is apparently so lucrative that it is was never incentivizing.
4. Wake Fans are not masochistic by nature.

Posted this in the comments section of that article, hope it can explain why I wrote that the way I did:

"The lasting impression when I wrote that, though, was that there was a Bronx cheer for a home team when it scored for the first time.
My apologies for wording that harshly."

Accepting is not the right word to use. I know yall aren't accepting of this. Sad is also probably the wrong word to use. Throw apathetic in there too. So, 0-for-3.

I'll do better in the future.

You should write an article explaining what you meant to make up for it.

Those terms don’t represent the fanatical 1% that frequent this message board, but while a little harsh as you mentioned, they may be fairly accurate for the majority of Wake fans right now. I don’t think the comment was that far out of line.

I was just messing around with Connor but I disagree. I’ve begrudgingly gone to most of our home games this year and the general sentiment is anger. There’s apathy, which I guess is close to accepting, but the VAST majority of our fans are furious. Even the sun shiniest of sunshiners are beyond pissed off and demanding change. I’d say maybe 1-5% of our fans are “accepting”.

I’m right there with you. I go to most games and I think anger is the best descriptor for most Wake fans regarding basketball.

Why are people still giving money to this program? Or wasting their time?

Another 6-7 years and they can catch up to the rest of us.

I will defer to you guys who are attending most of the games . If there is a lot of anger with most fans at the games, I have some hope.

Not letting Hoard off the hook but I wonder who is his roommate and why didn't he have his back?

Yeah but it’s only that 1-5% that matters. Wellman realized that a long time ago, and he puts all of his energy into fluffing them. Wake athletics are a rich man’s play thing. There’s a reason the Deacon Tower was built well before athletics facilities were upgraded,

It’s easier to stomach what’s happening and wisely leave Wake basketball to die when you realize this. You don’t matter. None of us do.

I can obviously only answer for myself, but I like supporting the players and my kids have fun at the games. I also enjoy watching high-level basketball [insert joke]. My only support of the bball team currently is through the purchase of season tickets, but I support several other programs more, namely tennis, soccer, and football [insert uniformed rant about how all the money really gets funneled to basketball]. I've had fun at some bball games this year (the NC State game was a lot of fun), but my god was the UNC game the most painful thing I have experienced in a long time.

You write this kind of thing a lot. There isn't some big conspiracy going on here. We just suck at basketball because we have a really bad coach.

To state the obvious - our basketball program has slept through the last 9 or so seasons. Pathetic.

Good post.

Rafi, we have a real bad coach because that 1-5% allows it.

We suck at basketball because after the unexpected death of our coach our AD made an arguably but understandable bad decision to hire then extend an assistant who probably should have just been made interim, then fired him after a couple of postseason appearances and being ranked pretty darn high in the rankings, hired a bad coach and made an ass of himself while defending and extending said coach, then hired another even WORSE coach and has kept him around way too long. I don't know of conspiracy is the word but clearly our leader is inept at running an ACC basketball program, it's obvious to the thousands of fans who don't attend, and every other fanbase, yet our AD keeps cashing checks with no accountability from the "people at the table." It's a little worse than we just have a bad coach.

He'll be fired at the end of the year. Then we'll hire another coach and give him at least 4 years. Hopefully it will be a really good hire, like Clawson.
