Possible Wake Forest Coaching Candidates Analysis

Lol. I attended Wake when it had a good bball team. It's been so long since Wake has had a good team that I simply want it to be good enough to consistently make the tourney. Setting all sorts of other conditions get in the way of that goal. Being a Duke alum shouldn't be a disqualifying condition. Why the fuck wouldn't a good bball player want to go to Duke? The good academics? Playing for arguably the best college coach? It's not fun being apart of a winning program? (You don't play school??? Then, go to UNC.) Fear you'd end up on the bench because of the other talent? If the last question is why someone didn't attend Duke, then fuck hiring him as a coach since he's scared of competition. The only decent reason would be to a legend at another school by getting them their first 'ship. Easy to be forgotten when you're on a championship team at Duke.

Your response is classic LOWF. Fucking inferiority complex.

Nice, avoid the real question. I'd say you were not at Wake when wojo was at dook.

We could make this a game, players that would never be allowed to coach your team

NC State - CP3
dook - Childress
KY - Laetner

I'm sure there are entire lists of 'do not hire' for each school.

Just say 'Nojo'!

I can't believe we are even debating this.

Best bet is to look at the context of the entire string. At no point did I compare Huggins and Odom. I had suggested that it is not atypical for schools to hire folks with ties. I was challenged that it is very rare and I simply included a list of who has coached at a place in which there were prior ties. That's all I was doing.

Understood, but ties count for a lot more when the coach has a proven track record on his own. If I recall correctly, Huggins wasn't interested in WVU when they hired Dakich and then Beilein (same year; Dakich backed out), meaning this whole thread might not be taking place if he had been and Beilein had come to Wake. Interesting alternate universe to ponder.

Let's look at the history:

To replace Odom, the Top 2 on my list were Majerus (whom I posted wouldn't take the job and Skip (first person to mention him)
To replace Dino, my list was one person - Stevens (and he was young). Wellman fucked that up.
To replace redacted, again my list was one person Shaka and Hatch screwed us on that one.

There is no one outstanding pick this time.

1. Matta - if healthy
2. TJ Otzelberger
3. Nate Oats
4. Will Wade (if cleared of wrong doing)
5. Earl Grant

Longshots would include Marshall, Forbes and Musselman.

So, Dino was fired two days after Hayward missed the half court shot to give Brad Stevens a National championship. Your list consisted of only his name?? That sounds realistic.
Everyone will have their own preference, but being happier with TJ than Oats is silly IMO.

Anyone who was a Wake fan in the 90s and before should never be ok with ANY ex Dukie player as our basketball coach, especially Wojo.

It was logical and in place...

As to TJ and Oats, it's not like one is #1 and the other isn't on the list. 2/3 is a toss up.

I like Otz, but I'd be a little worried the guy can't coach defense. SDSU has given up a ton of points during his career and their Kenpom defensive rankings have always been subpar under him. He's also been under a couple different coaches that definitely prioritize offense over defense (McDermott, Romar, Hoiberg).

I have no doubt his teams would be fun to watch, though, probably similar to Skip and Manning when the teams were doing well

I have been a Wake fan my entire life. From the Skip/Griffin/Schellenberg teams to the Johnson/Helms/Rogers/Morgan Johnstone teams to the Retire Meyer win with Teachey/Young/Rudd/Green through the years when Muggsy was our only player to the rebirth under Odom with Rogers/Childress/Duncan and Back to Back ACC Tourney Champs to Skip taking over and bringing in CP3, I have seen it all.

And I don't give a damn if we hire a Dukie or a Tarhole as Head Coach. I just want the person who can lead us back to the place where Wake basketball is worth caring about, worth spending time and emotional energy on. I want the coach to lead us to the top. I'm tired of Wake basketball being losers.

I attended in the 70’s and miss Wake basketball terribly, too. And I agree in principle that we need to hire the best coach possible, regardless of his college affiliation. But Wojo? Uh, no. No, no, no.

Logical from our perspective sure. In place? I really need details to believe this. (Not saying you are wrong - no idea).

Back when I was at Wake, Majerus mentioned his favorite restaurant in Winston. Me and some friends looked it up thinking if anybody would know where to eat, it’s Majerus. It was way outside of our college budget price range. Wish I remembered what it was. Wouldn’t mind checking it out now.

Feel like Boheim used to pump Vincenzo’s on Robin Hood. Also the site of my and the wife’s first date.

NCDomer, time to take the L on this thread. And, just to be clear, you’re a Wake alum and your message board name is NCDomer? Any Notre Dame family ties? Are you a Notre Dame alum? Or just a bandwagon fan? Says a lot about your thoughts regarding Wake. If you’re a bandwagon Notre Dame fan then it’s easy to see why you’re not that passionate about keeping Dukies away from Winston-Salem.

I'm wondering if I should be concerned if Boeheim and I agree on anything, even if it is just a restaurant.

I think you're too used to losing that you now tolerate it. After a fucking decade of shit bball, you want to avoid successful coaches because they went to Duke. Notre Dame was stupid about its football coaches for a while too. Hired an assistant who didn't work out. Took a flyer on a guy with limited HC experience. Followed that up with an alum. Eventually, they found the best candidate available and hired him. FWIW, in some of Kelly's down years, people talked about trying to hire Harbaugh. Few fans gave two shits that he's a Michigan alum. They just want to win (provided it's not via cheating).
