WHY is he still our basketball coach?

So how did you get the idea wake is a for profit organization with shareholders. ? Like it or not their main objective remains educational.

Well, not necessarily as a corporate going concern in the traditional sense. But yes, we want growth, but how big? And at what costs?

But that's a different thread for a different time. I digress. However, I do think it's ridiculous that we can't get out of our own way to resuscitate a once somewhat storied BB program that can be a very powerful marketing driver of revenues for the AD as well as clout, cachet and buzz for the University as a whole. If the BB program does well, the fat cats ostensibly get fatter!! I don't get it how this bizzarro world can exist where we have sustained FB success twice in a 15 year period, but a completely LOST decade of misery for basketball. Just like it is easier to turn around a BB program in theory (smaller number of players, easier pool of resources to manage in theory), I guess it doesn't take much to burn the fucker right to the ground either, conversely!

More miraculous moment of Danny Manning's career: the 88 title run or securing this ridiculous contract?

Definitely the buyout deal. Pure genius...and get a gig with your old team being John Collins' personal assistant WHILST getting paid by WFU for a decade??

Easy call.

Dearest Mitt, we would owe you

That would be one helluva accomplisMITT if he were to pull it off. But the Hawks once traded their best player ever for Danny's beat up knees. Then they overpaid Jon Koncak. Would this be like reversing the nut punch sort of thing maybe? Can Danny help both Wake AND the Hawks return to former glory days??

Do we need to hire Chris Paul's brother CJ to replace Randolph Childress on the bench? And Cliff Paul to do our risk management?

Time to bring the Prodigal Son home, Atlanta Hawks.

Manning was smart enough to get WF to pony up not one, but two multi-million contracts with some solid buy-out protection.

The lazy accusation is just so baseless and plain wrong. Manning made more than $60 million in his NBA career. He literally could sit on his arse for the rest of his life and still take care of his family for generations. Instead he took an unpaid graduate assistant's position at KS, and legitimately worked his way up the coaching ladder in Lawrence, a top 5 program, to become assistant head coach for a program that went to multiple final 4s and won a Natty while he was on the staff. Manning then took the Tulsa job, and took them to a conference championship and an NCAA bid in year 2. While he has generally failed at WF, there was no sign that the poor results were attributable to a lack of effort.

Coaching in the ACC is hard. Lots of smart and hard-working coaches have failed at this level. So misguided and juvenile to assign personal flaws to those that try and fail.

So is this Hawks thing real, or am I on the wrong side of an inside joke?

Agree with jaybone that Va Tech doing well in the Big Dance would certainly help us. Just like it would have been in our favor for Texas to have lost last night in front of hundreds of their fans! They tried to give it away but somehow managed to win. That keeps Shaka busy for a while - having the Longhorns go on a NIT run would def not benefit us.

Coaches and agents have a better feel than we do for which jobs are about to come open. Playing School A off against School B is a game that probably happens. Maybe not a lot, but some. The converse of that also likely happens with schools saying "coach we would love to have you but we can't wait forever." A huge game of chicken on both sides, with a little poker thrown in.

The big difference IMO is that if anything Buzz or Texas Tech would OWE VTech money they could then use to buy Shaka. We have the opposite problem. Whatever happens with Danny, we certainly won't be playing with house money like VTech.

Do we think that Va Tech hasn't read a message board and knows that Buzz is Tx Tech's top target? It's not like we have some inside scoop. If they are interested in a Shaka if Buzz leaves, Shaka and his agent know that.

Buzz's buyout is $1 million right now. That is not where A&M is breaking the bank. They are going to be offering him more than $4 million/year to coach.
