NCAAT discussion (the end)

IIRC the jump ball was taken out because refs suck at doing them.

They are hard to do and dangerous for the officials. Flying elbows & flying basketballs and all. Really hard to make a good toss with guys that tall. You ought to try standing in there with two 7 footers and get the ball straight up to 10 feet with them knocking against you.

Taking their lowest win percentage in their last three games, their odds of winning all three was .04%

commented last night that UVA both felt deserving of a national championship and extremely lucky to have won

The calls on the Jerome trip and the overturned out of bounds totally paved the way.

UVa with Ralph Sampson never winning an ACC championship nor national title but getting there to the Final Four in 1984 with Olden Polynice?

At least Sampson made it to the Final Four once. I think that I would trade one of Duncan's ACC Championships for a Final Four appearance.

Yeah Hunter will definitely go and I think after this tournament run Jerome will also leave.

UVA will still have six top 100 ESPN recruits on their team: Diakite, Guy, Key, Huff and they're bringing in Casey Morsell and Kadin Shedrick.

In 2020 they're also bringing in another white guard from Greensboro Day in Carson McCorkle (who reclassified from class of 2021 a few weeks ago).

Another white kid? ....did Manning try to recruit him? What a season this has been with more attention being paid to Hoard an a Mock Draft than Wake basketball. Looks like I will save more money by not buying season tickets.

So it has to be asked, is UVA the luckiest team to ever win a natty?

UNC won by an inadvertent pass and a timeout that didn't exist.

I don't care if they were leading or not - that's how they won. :)

were wake/uva on about equal ground historically before they hired bennett and we hired bz?

Yes. I’ve had that thought many times over the past few weeks. If anything, Wake was probably a little bit better.

P.S. I imagine that if Wake ever gets there, it will require a very similar amount of crazy plays and breaks, in which we cash in all our bad historical juju all at once. Kinda like the 2004 Red Sox.

I've always felt badly for Fred Brown. That's a lot to put on a kid. As for Webber, I always thought he got the disproportionate blame for that play. He was their C. The ball was inbounded to him, and none of the guards came to get the ball. Jalen Rose was hiding behind his defender at midccourt, and Webber had to dribble it all the way down the court himself. What team has their C doing that?

It was a rebound of a Pat Sullivan free throw and Jalen Rose was standing 12 feet from him on the sideline. Not to mention that Webber routinely dribbled the ball up and down the court.

What the fuck are you talking about ?

Webber rebounded a missed free throw and Rose was right there waiting for the ball

Tony Bennett is 49.

10 years from now, is Tony Bennett:

a) Still the UVA Coach, with 250+ more wins, more ACC titles, Final 4s and maybe even another Natty or two having built UVA into an elite power on par with the best of the best college programs;
b) Coaching for some other NCAA School: Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, Wisconsin (his home state);
c) Coaching in the NBA, taking the Brad Stevens route to try coaching on another level (also Bennett played 3+ seasons in the NBA);
d) Out of coaching and using his success and notoriety in some altruistic fashion;
e) Still the UVA Coach, but the program falls back to the middling level that has been UVA's history until Bennett took over.

I think that UVa's two Final Fours in the '80s puts them a little ahead of Wake before Bennett

I say (a)

And didn't UVA lose like 6 guys two years ago with people saying it was tough to get kids to play in the boring Bennett system ??

I think UVA was picked to finish dead last in the ACC after losing a bunch of players and ended up as the #1 overall seed last year.

I'd say (a). Bennett has a real shot at making UVA an elite program if he continues his success. Other schools may come calling, but I'd be surprised if he leaves. Especially for Wisconsin or someone like that.

Yes— very close
Each has 23 NCAA tournaments, but three with Bennett, so Wake slightly better

ACC record since inception in 1953–almost identical now, so Wake better before Bennett:

Wake—W—442 L—538
UVA—. W—445. L—524
