Game of Thrones - House of the Dragon - (and beyond) Discussion (spoilers allowed)

I had a bunch of folks posting in my FB feed about how awesome of an ep it was. I’m kind of in the camp of there were a few sweet scenes, but overall it was too dark, not much actually happened, way fewer people died than expected, and the NK was less interesting than he could’ve been.

The Dothraki riding out with the flaming swords and watching them go out was cool. Leana taking out wight Wan Wan was great. Throw back reference to Syrio loved that.

+1

Why did Bran warg into the ravens? That was pointless

This NKs tactics are a pretty big plot hole, but whatever. If he waits outside for 30 minutes, everyone dies and he can do what he wants with Bran.

Needed more death. There were a few scenes where it was obvious a hero should have died, but they just transitioned to another scene then came back to the hero being in a better situation than they left it.

So the greatest enemy of our time or whatever was completely defeated in one battle at one location over several hours, with a fraction of the living participating

And a fraction of the dead. The Night King had a big army, but he recruited almost entirely of people who lived at or north of the wall.

The living had multiple foreign armies (one of which was worthless) and several domestic ones. Along with 2 dragons.

And Arya.

Was looking like Tyrion and Sansa were going to off themselves but that led to them...going back to the others in the crypt?

The more I reevaluate that episode in the light of day, the more disappointed I am by it. Obvi the Arya and Lyanna moment were badass, but the more I think about all of it, the worse it looks, especially all the build-up of the Night King. To be fair though, that episode kills off the one aspect of the show IDGAF about and lets us focus on what's made the show great for so long.

yeah I'm disappointed with all the build-up to the zombies, but you're right -- I'm glad to have the zombies out the way since as I said last night, zombies are lame and not at all what make this show great.

Can we all discuss the character who did spectacularly awful at their job -

You think the NK was a waste but how about the white walkers?? Is the one Sam killed years ago the only one we ever saw die on screen? Incredible they didn’t sacrifice a couple of the heroes vs nameless zombies for a few good battles with the big dudes that stand out in the darkness. Makes no sense!!

No, we have seen multiple WW die. Jon killed at least one at Hardhome and another was killed last season beyond the wall when they retrieved the zombie.

Really dislike all these Monday Morning QB's saying that Arya killing the NK was telegraphed from season 1, using examples like He was the god of death, in the analogy of Gendry calling the horde of zombie's death, or how she used that knife move with Brienne last season, or the Melissandre thing. Thats all BS. So what the Prince that was Promised who would end the night is just a big MacGuffin? Are people gonna say that Arya is now the Prince that was promised?

The dark, smokey, snowy thing at the beginning kinda makes sense from a budgetary stand point, you show bits and pieces of a big battle, alot of sound, without having to show all of it. Some of the scenes they did show were very expansive to make. Showing tens of thousands of soldiers being killed costs alot more than hearing them being killed.

Also so now its like 7 or 8 people vs. Cersei?

and two dragons and a direwolf.

yeah I've never liked his arc. Was fine when they went a whole season without him. He's now boring and lame and apparently doesn't do anything.

I'm definitely in the camp of thinking this whole season so far is a waste. Last night in particular. Totally lame episode with a lot of story problems, plot armor and fan service. I didn't like it when I watched it last night, and the more I've thought about it since then, the less I like it.

My brother texted my this morning, "At this point Arya's just going to ride into King's Landing on Rhaegal with Jon. He will drop her out of midair and yell "Stick her with the pointy end!!" As she drops backward out of the sky with a smirk on her face. She'll do a few flips before she crashes through the ceiling of the red keep and does a super hero landing in front of Cersei. Then just before stabbing her with the same dagger she'll say something like "Tyrion sends his regards... And drinking is bad for babies."

Sadly, my response was, "Yeah, at this point. Why not?"

For those with HBOGO and a Chromecast, the episode looks much better than the downgraded resolution cable version. I could actually tell what was going on.

At the end I was left with the thought that somehow Arya is going to end up leading everything. Seemed important that Jon and Dany completely failed. And did Jon think he was going to kill the dragon by yelling at it -- was he just ready to die?

How they are going to justify that there is any sort of army left at this point, I dunno

odds on this all being set up for a Cersei-run massacre of main characters?
