Men's Golf

Really hard to believe clamoring to replace a coach of a team that entered the post-season ranked 3rd in the country. Advanced through the regionals and then the through the championship round to match-play over 25 of the best college teams, played as a tight of quarterfinal as is possible and then essentially finished tied for 5th in the country.

Understand that other than Oklahoma State and Stanford, there is no college program with WF's golf history, but it really is apples to oranges to compare WF's golf success in the 70s and 80s to today. Ships were unlimited and at most a handful of schools put any effort into winning at golf. Now, there are at least 40 programs (and probably more) that max out the financial commitment to win in college golf. Some of these programs have elite on-site golf courses which WF simply does not have.

No one is clamoring to replace Haas based on this season. People have been clamoring to replace Haas for 20+ years now, and will continue doing it in spite of this season. But no one is really clamoring to replace him at all on this thread, just discussing his history, and the fact that an exception, or even a handful of successful seasons out of 2+ decades, does not define a coach. You could actually argue quite a few folks are claiming that Haas is a great coach based on this season and others are simply pointing out that he's not.

Well yeah, except for the poster who has wanted him fired for ten years.

He should retire. Go out on a high note and let's give someone else a shot after 22 years. It's weird to see the same people saying Wellman should go arguing that Haas shouldn't be on the hot seat.

I mean if you wanna parse words about some in the fan base wanting him out now by saying they’re not “clamoring” but simply want him “to retire” go for it.

In 2009, he had been the coach for 12 years with no ACC championships and 2 top 10 NCAA finishes, with Webb and Bill for 8 of those seasons. Wanting him fired then should not have been an unpopular opinion. And the next ten years were even worse, until this season.

Just finished 3rd in the nation in the regular season and tied for 5th in the NCAA tournament. There is no way on God's green earth that Jerry Haas should be on any hot seat. In fact he should be getting a raise and a contract extension. You are crazy. People that think golf today is anywhere near the same thing as it was in the 70's just don't know the landscape. 4.5 schollies vs basically unlimited back in the 70's. When we could have a Scott Hoch on the back burner on B team in 75 & 76 things are quite different then.

Just watched the recording of the end of the Wake/Stanford match. Man, the Detmer match really came down to a matter of inches. If Detmer's wedge lands a yard to the left, it probably ends up 10 feet closer, as it seemed to just catch a little ridge that pulled it away from the hole. And then if the Stanford guy hits his putt with any less speed at all, or just plays it a half inch more left, it doesn't fall in.

Is that correct? I've noticed a lot of talk between some players and coaches during the NCAA's on the Golf Channel and I doubt they're talking about where they're going for dinner.

My assumption was that NCAA golf is played under the rules of golf as established by the USGA and the R&A. Rule 10 states defines illegal advice as:

- Choosing a club
- Making a stroke
- How to play during a hole or a round

What is allowed are:

- the location of things on the course like bunkers or pins
- distance from one point to another
- advice about the the rules of golf

In other words, advice about public information is allowed. Advice about how to play is not.

College golf plays by different rules. Coaches follow the players, assist with literally every decision including club selection, and how to play each shot and even match strategy when they are in match play. College golfers also use range finders, which are illegal at other levels of golf. FWIW, Stanford is on the verge of winning the Natty.

Well all you had to do was watch 10 minutes of the coverage and know that the rules Shorty states do not apply to coaching in college golf. Last night one of the Texas players and the coach were discussing a shot and specifically the club choice. In other words, you are still incorrect.
