2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

Because men suck so much.

Is it just men? That would be my first assumption, but maybe female candidates are polling relatively poorly with women as well. I bet 538 has had a piece on that issue. But yeah, Pete generally polls a bit better v. Trump than Harris does. So maybe it's better to be a gay white man than a woman of color. I dunno.

The amount of people of eastern NC that I talked to in 2016 who voted for Trump but said they would have considered voting for Bernie (mostly millennials) told me about all I needed to know about that type of voter. My guess is that they probably would have stuck to their conservative guns, literally, but it was obvious that they really just wanted an angry, old white dude.

I'm really hoping these abortion bans in Alabama and Missouri will hurt in the battleground states, but there are a lot of fake Christians out there with some hindsight bias.

White women supported Trump over Hillary.

Misogyny is one of the most pervasive biases, and it's not just men who distrust or dislike women.

Could that not be read that to say 50% want a more progressive candidate and 37% want a center leaning Dem candidate? I mean maybe all Warren or Sanders supporters don't support the most similar candidate as their backup, but it still would seem to be more likely than those who support Biden.

538 did have a piece on Sanders and Warren a while back. Surprisingly, they weren't necessarily the 2nd choices of each other. And Warren appeals to college educated folks, whereas Sanders appeals to non-college educated folks. I think they said Biden was the most frequent 2nd choice to Sanders voters because he appeals to white working class voters like Bernie does. Seems counter intuitive, but I thought it was interesting that similar ideology isn't that predictive.

I don’t think most people think on a left right continuum. There are a few things they care about and the rest comes down to liking the person and feeling like that person cares about them.

He was part wrong and part right. I disagree with him on Franken. I agree that Republicans use our own values against us.

I posted this while back and I stand by it.

That article doesn’t really offer much. What it doesn’t address is that many Democrats would have deserted the party if they didn’t force out Franken. And many Republicans would have deserted the party if they didn’t force through Kavanaugh. This isn’t a difference in tactics. This is a difference in basic values.

Republicans use Democrat values against us. The only way to stop that is to gain power and use it to force Republicans to operate by the same values.

Biden busted again on plagiarism for his "climate plan". At least half a dozen excerpts seem to have been directly lifted from other sources. After getting caught, the campaign has added footnotes.

Yup, sloppy campaign work, but only a blip on the big radar picture (I'm assuming this was a staffer who wrote it b/c it's not like Biden is exactly an expert on climate change).

It’s so frustrating that we need to treat these climate change plans as being big deals and rolled out. Like I get it, there’s a small group of people that refuse to act and they happen to control government but the shit is just common sense. Like energy plans that help climate change, would obviously create tons of jobs, and reduce the need to fuck around in different parts of the world. Nah we good give me some of that freedom gas.

It shows terrible campaign management. The #1, #2, #3, all the way #1000 and beyond for a Biden campaign is to check and recheck everything for even a hint of plagiarism. The rest of the army that is running is looking for a way to take him off his perch. Now, they can say, "there he goes again".

The only possibly good thing they can garner from this is that it happened so early.

You're overreacting. This isn't on the level of Hillary's emails. Add to that Biden has a bit of teflon, more so than the other Dem candidates. You just know he's going to misspeak here and there because he likes to hear himself talk way too much, but it's just Joe being Joe, and in the end, he's still that comfortable old blanket. Stuff like this won't become a big deal unless it becomes a bunch of repeated missteps to the point where the public starts to wonder if he's losing it.

It really should not be that big of a deal. The role of the Presidential Candidate is to be a spokes person for the party's ideas. While policy proposal do originate from the white house, it is far more important for the President to be really good at selling ideas to legislators and the public than generating his/her own. He definitely should be citing sources, but it would not bother me at all if he campaigned on "I'm the guy that can build the relationships and networks necessary to successfully implement AOC's Green New Deal..." or whatever pro-climate environmental policy he steals.

Yeah. Sadly, there are Dem voters who want to believe their candidate is on a laptop hammering out these policy points themselves.

Think my problem is he's not really keen on selling key party ideas and wants it to still be the mid-90s Dem party.

He's still pro-Hyde amendment, still not backing down from crime bill shit, still not apologizing for terrible takes on wars, basically just an intractable old man. I'm not sure how good he'll be pushing a remotely progressive agenda. Dude would make a killer GOP candidate if he just grifted a little harder.

LOL. The gap between Biden and the GOP is huge. This kind of rhetoric from the left is sad.

I'm not particularly pro-Biden, I just don't care that he lifted his climate change proposals from someone else...in fact I am kinda glad he did because I totally expected his environmental policy to be largely pro-business and not so much pro-environment.

He is not my first choice, but I am holding off on falling in love with any Dem candidate for now because I don't want to end up hating the others when one of them inevitable wins the nomination. (My preferred candidate never wins the nomination.)
