Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

Though TBF if we come in 2nd we'd get Germany in the QFs -- not a ton easier. Didn't wind up in an ideal group for the knockout draw

Ok, I understand your argument. But disagree with that strategy. We're the holders. #1 in the world. Bringing entire stadiums full of fans. We play to win.
 
Yeah no chance you lose or draw on purpose at this point. The only time you would ever see that happening is after 2 group matches and the table is something like:

A- 6 points
B- 4 points
C- 1 point
D- 0 points

Where A could field a weaker line up having already qualified and then B could pass them, needing to win to guarantee their spot in the knockout rounds.
 
Fair, but intentionally trying to improve our goal difference to give ourselves a harder draw doesn't make any sense

Nah. These are adults. They know full well the team they are playing is absolute dogshit. I actually have some problem with running up the score so high, but that at least can be grounded in some sort of logic - be it to assure you win the group (if that is advantageous) or to assure you stay sharp. But running around celebrating goal after goal like you just accomplished something special is poor form. By goal #6 the whole world knows that Thailand has no business being on the field. But Rapinoe is running around as if she just steered a spaceship to the fucking moon after each goal. It's a bad look and makes the players look as if they are bigger than the sport and have no respect whatsoever for anyone. It's like Miami back in the day celebrating touchdown 10 against the Citadel as if they'd just won the fucking national title. It looks dumb.

Either way to win it all they are eventually going to have to beat a couple of the tourney's best teams regardless of which side of the draw they are on. What are there, perhaps three teams that can give them a legit game in this thing. I don't think they are going into any game in the group stage all that worried about when that happens to them.
 
Understood, I'm just discrediting "running up the goal difference" as a validation for what went down yesterday
 
I love this time of year. Lots of soccer experts with lots of opinions, who for some reason have forgotten the basic rules of the game.

I know it's the thing right now among certain groups to blame "the PC media" for everything because gaslighting, but ESPN analysts complaining about running a score up/celebrating double digit goals has nothing to do with being PC.

It has everything to do with PC. All the arguments being made in criticism are about how it "looks bad" to score and celebrate goals scored in the WC. None of the folks making the charges were involved in the game AT ALL. There are no other reasonable arguments being made. Thailand, had no complaint at all. They won two games in the prequalifying stages 13-0 and 11-0. I don't think they are humiliated at all, just enlightened to their need to continue to improve. The argument that the USWNT should consider trying to finish second in the group to avoid France in the knockout stage is also just complete garbage. That assumes your team doesn't believe they could defeat France so would prefer to lose to them later in the draw. That's a ridiculous premise for a WC Champion to introduce into their mentality during a defense of the cup. That's the kind of thing a youth soccer team does because the coach and parents are afraid of losing ( I've been there so I know). This whole discussion is about PC. It should be about appreciating the efforts of our National team. If they don't cheat or disrespect or injure their opponents directly with intent, then they can score and celebrate all they want. Winning the WC isn't guaranteed. God bless them for trying so hard to be good.

I havent seen any of the games but you don't celebrate more than a hug and high five when you're up 8-0. I might give a pass in the final, but in a group stage match against a clearly outmatched opponent? Disappointing.

That said, you keep attacking and playing your game. You need momentum and cohesion to win the tournament and sitting back and insulting the opponent by playing keepaway doesn't do that. It also asks for a rash tackle out of frustration.

This is my view as well. It seems perfectly reasonable to both continue playing hard and to tone down your celebrations in a game long since decided. It's not a question of what is politically correct, but rather what is respectful.
 
Fair to say that no one here has ever participated in the pinnacle event of the profession that they've dedicated their entire life to, so any opinion on what "should be done" is pretty meaningless.
