Good article on the human cost of Trumpism, but I'm not so sure that I agree that "only now" can we understand the cost and cruelty of what Trump is doing. There were plenty of people who warned in the 2016 campaign of what Trump and his followers would try to do if they were elected, and others who warned where Trump and his cronies were going when they started this policy right after he took office. They were ignored (at least by most of the news media and nearly all Republicans) and so here we are. Part of the story of Trump is one in which lots of people tried to warn what would happen if he was elected POTUS, and just enough people ignored them to put him in office anyway. But it's not as if anything he's done since January 2017 is a surprise or a shock, or at least it shouldn't be. It's what happens when you elect a totally unqualified and inexperienced reality-show TV star who lacks any human empathy or ability for personal growth whatsoever, who treats others merely as tools or objects subject to his whims, to be discarded as needed with no sense of loyalty, who has no moral or ethical conscience whatsoever, and who, as his own biographer repeatedly stated in 2016, has spent his entire adult life doing whatever the hell he wants with no repercussions or consequences, and operates like a classic mob boss.
Since January 2017, we've had unprecedented levels of corruption, a bumbling foreign policy that has alienated and baffled our allies and sucked up to dictators that he personally admires, and no concern whatsoever for Constitutional rules and norms that have kept our Republic together for generations. He's spent his entire adult life vindictively and pettily going after anyone who dares to criticize or oppose him, and by nature he is a divider and hater, not a unifier. There isn't a dignified or generous bone in his body. And for anyone who disagrees, please explain his behavior since he took office. As long as he is POTUS, the cruelty will continue, not only towards immigrants, but anyone who gets in his way. And now that he's finally driven away anyone in his administration who is even tepidly or timidly willing to privately stand up to him, and surrounded himself with sycophants and fellow nutcases like Barr and Miller and Mulvaney, there is nothing and no one to stop him except Congress. And as Congressional Republicans are now part of his cult, it means they aren't going to stop him either. So, here we are.
Sure. But her emails. Trump was the lesser of two evils.
