The 2019 College Football Thread ! LSU NATIONAL CHAMPIONS ! CLEMSON SUCKS !!!!!!!!!!!

I like expanding the playoffs because I like more football. I think that a G5 team should get in but with a caveat - they have to be in the top 12 or something similar. I would have liked to see UCF have a shot a couple of years ago, and there have been some great teams that would have come out of that group - like the TCU, Boise St., and Utah teams from the late 2000s.

Also probably controversial, but I think that the amount of teams in an expanded playoff should be limited to two from the same conference. I like seeing different conferences play and different styles go against each other. The Wake/A&M game from a couple of years ago was one of the most exciting bowl games in recent history.

Yeah, the SEC's not voting for that.

Of course they aren't. Good thing it's not the College Football SEC Playoffs.

What's your rationale for putting together a playoff that might reach for the #9 team instead of the #5 team ?

Just for kicks I looked at the rankings from last year and the teams would have been:

1. Alabama SEC champ v. 10. Washington PAC12 Champ
2. Clemson ACC champ v. 8. UCF G5 Champ
3. Notre Dame at large v. 6. tOSU B1G Champ
4. Oklahoma Big12 Champ v. 5. Georgia SEC at large

Leaving out #7 Michigan

That would have all been fine and Clemson and tOSU would have met in the second round and I think Georgia would have beaten Oklahoma last year to get another shot at Alabama in the semis.

I really don't like the idea of expanding the playoffs just so we can let the #17 team in the country get blown out on New Years Day because they won the MAC and a 10-3 Washington can test Alabama.

I tend to agree with this.

I actually think a 4 team playoff is perfect. Enough scarcity value for each of the 4 spots that the regular season matters. Gives us all something to argue about. We'd still argue over who gets into an 8-team playoff, but I don't think you ever risk leaving out a worthy champion in that scenario. I guess that's the point?

As it is, it has been a rarity for the #1 vs #4 semifinal to be competitive. #1 vs #8 is going to be a huge waste of time.

But 8 teams is an inevitability.

Additionally, Sean Clifford has admitted to taking a small loan and has requested a one game suspension for next week.

I think that would have been awesome. Not sure that I agree about Georgia beating OU but I would have loved to see that game. And it may work out to be the same final four as it would have been before expansion, or it might not - that's the beauty of playing the games. And I think Clemson was still the best team so they most likely would have won, but I enjoy the journey just as much as getting to the final result.

And fine, maybe there's no two team rule, I just think that would be interesting.

She has earned my attention.

I went to high school with her although I never earned her attention.*

*School had 4000 kids and I never actually met her or knew who she was.

Who was #9?

Gus Malzahn 10-0 coming off a bye week (the anti-Clawson) including the Kick Six against Alabama.

Minnesota is +3 at Iowa but I keep hearing they should be ranked in the top six or something.

Not that NIU really gives a shit about rules or decorum either, but at least no one was actually endangered.

There are rumors that Arkansas is doing whatever they can to find a way to get Malzahn (from Arkansas, went to Arkansas; HS coaching legend in Arkansas; was the OC at Arkansas, when they were a factor, coached at Arkansas State). Auburn's fan base is so delusional that if Auburn loses to UGA and Bama (or maybe to just one of them); they may be willing to let Malzahn go even though Auburn played a ridiculous schedule.

If Arkansas can't hire Malzahn, guessing they will hire App Coach Eliah Drinkwitz. He also is from Arkansas, went to Arkansas Tech, was a HS coach in Arkansas and an assistant coach at Arkansas State. Would be tough hit for the App program to lose coaches in consecutive years.
