Danny Manning replacement search thread

If Dino was retained as head coach, he'd likely have been fired the next season anyways since the 2010-11 team was likely to struggle even without a coaching change. So maybe waiting a year would have provided better optics (not firing a NCAA coach off a 20-11 season) and in turn provided WF with a better pool of coaches to choose from but ultimately we could easily be in the exact same position now anyways since it seems like Bzz was the apple of Wellman's eye from the beginning.

Also, firing Dino and using the excuse "lack of post-season success" and then hiring a coach with zero post-season success wasn't a good look. Fuck you Ron Wellman!

78, are you saying that Wellman put out at least one false narrative? That he would do such a thing?

Hmmmmm

I like Dino and am sorry things played out the way they did for him at Wake. But there were signs of trouble even apart from whatever went on behind the scenes that made RW pull the trigger when he did. The Cleveland State loss still stands as one of the most embarrassing moments in WF sports history. That loss was to Dino what the Butler fiasco was to Odom.

Tony Bennett had the most embarrassing loss in NCAA history. How’d that work out for him?

The nature of the tourney means that most teams will have “embarrassing” losses if they are making the tournament regularly. Judging a coach only by those games is dumb.

Delaware State, Presbyterian, Houston Baptist, William & Mary, Stetson .... all say "hold my beer!!!!" Losing to Cleveland State in big-boy basketball ain't even close!!

Call me crazy but I think the 11' team would have been between a 16-18 win NIT team with Dino. As oppose to one of the worst teams in WF history.

This NCAA upsets happen all the time. We also followed that up with a NCAA turney win over Texas

If Dino had had multiple 30-win seasons before the CSU debacle (like Bennett did) we would all see it in a different light.

A FSU buddy of mine says Skip’s sons WCU team put on a clinic against the Noles. Can we go to that well another time?

How about hiring someone who’s not a complete ass to his boss this time?

"There are only two basketball guys total on the committee and eight for the football playoff. I was in a room with four people in a campus office. A gentleman said 'I don't know much about basketball, I know a lot about organization, management, and budgets. Four years later he is on the (NCAA) committee, and four years after that he is the chair of the committee. He was right, he doesn't know much about basketball. You have to have basketball guys on the committee."

Wellman, self-admitted he didn't know shit about basketball, yet tried to manage it anyway, resulting in the worst 10-year stretch in program history. Everyone should be an ass to him. He single-handedly torpedoed the University's flagship athletic program.

Coming into this season his career record was 12-48 with a .200 win%. That would be the exact opposite of a homerun hire.
There were so many (bad) emotional based choices with Wake ties that were argued for last spring when we thought Manning was going to get fired. I hope Currie makes fact and data based decisions rather than feeling based like his mentor Wellman.

All this. And i'm sure some AD shill is like "why are you still talking about Dino?" but when all you've done is lie to us for 9 years, that shit gonna happen. I have an 11 yo daughter who (no shit) thinks Wake is a football school.

She's not alone in that thought even among people much older.

Wonder if Childress will be around next year for the hopeful new coach. I could see Wellman asking Currie to keep him around.
