Basham, Surratt, Hartman and Kern return

Anyone saying people dislike Clawson, or he is not personable is speaking out of their ass. I've talked with Clawson a couple times and he has been very friendly and personable, the guys I know that have played under him love him, and every second-hand account I've ever heard about Clawson has been positive. Bunch of bullshit made up by people on this board.

So, boy wonder decides to leave the program, as a starter, and now there are rumors that Clawson is "difficult" and not liked by high school coaches.

Hmmm. Something is starting to stink.

Do you owe your employer total fealty?

If someone offered you a better opportunity to live your professional dream and a chance to maximize your potential, would it be bad for you to take this job?

It says things about you if you refuse to play in the game that is the culmination of the season. Makes one question your commitment to the team.
Would likely sow questions for NFL teams about how you will react if you struggle in the league.

It keeps you nice and safe for the draft but there is a perceptual cost.
I don't think NFL scouts care about stuff like that. They want to know if you can play, as long as you aren't a complete headcase. They probably fully respect those who make the "selfish" decision because they understand the money involved. They don't care how your bowl game goes. They want your talents to transfer to their team so they can keep their jobs.

He will always be a Wake Forest University Alumnus, because he is leaving with a diploma. We will see if he is a Demon Deacon at heart.
And how will we know this?

1) These questions have nothing to do with the post

2) Your undergraduate institution is not your employer, and most people feel some sense of loyalty towards it. The way he left was inappropriate, giving the coaches short notice while also throwing them under the bus in his twitter post. He can go fuck himself. Selfish and disloyal.

For an athlete, an undergrad institution is pretty close to an employer.

22fan’s definitely going to be the guy that checks every Jamie Newman box score next year and runs here to gloat if he has a bad game.

Hopefully the Wellmanites will have their pearls ready for clutching over such a boorish preference for winning games over displaying class, dignity, and sportsmanship.

Let's just extend this philosophy out further then. Perhaps my high school should have paid me to play basketball and baseball. Why do it to compete and play something you enjoy, while also boosting your college application right? It's just about money. I had to guard guys that went high-major D1, to the NBA, and played on Olympic teams. My school charged 5 dollar admission to basketball games. I need a piece of that action, since schools are employers now. Nevermind the going to class and getting an education + degree, because all that matters is I played sports in school.

My take is that you have to separate your fandom from unbiased judgment. The two don't always mesh.

As a fan I can wish Jamie stayed, and feel more loyalty and excitement for players who stay. Like in 10 years, looking back I probably won't have as much fondness for him as I would have had he led us to another bowl next year. But removed from my fandom I can recognize that each person has to do what is best for him, and in this case it isn't like he trashed the program on the way out. He seems like a good guy.

If we'd landed the #1 QB in the class this year, wouldn't Jamie's job have been in jeopardy? So it has to work both ways. Everybody is simultaneously on the team / for the team, but also looking out for his best interests. It's actually a rather interesting sociological experiment, fair to say Ph?

Watch out with this take. The palma and mako crew will make you out to be a crazy old white dude because they know best about young black athletes.

When do players enter the transfer portal to come to Wake in their 5th year to start at QB? If you can't objectively answer that question, it's perfectly okay. Because Jamie Newman just held a mirror up to the face of Wake Forest sports.

I also think Clawson is not everyone’s cup of tea

Dude seems pretty intense and not terribly flexible of mind — works for some people, maybe not for others

Someone posted on the recruiting thread that a lot of HS coaches don’t like him — no clue if that’s true, but it’s not hard to believe

It’s not like dude is a Skip Prosser-type

The oddest thing is the one time I met Prosser he was short and kind of rude to me. The one time i've met Clawson he was really nice. I did ask a former Grobe player that is around Winston what they thought of Clawson compared to Grobe they said he was alright but sorta robatic whatever he meant by that.

It’s a microcosm of the basic challenges of forming and maintaining a society.

My only complaint is that I think Jamie knew this was what he wanted to do for at least a few days before the Pinstripe Bowl. I keep repeating myself, but I watched all three QBs warm up last Friday because I got their wack early with my son. Jamie was workman-like but not really communicating with anyone other than a few of the team olds. In hindsight, I think this pending decision was at distraction, and that is putting the best possible spin on it.

Hartman was all id. He was Hollywood. He was prancing around like the team alpha making throws and goofing around with everyone. Now, that is easier to do when you know you won't be taking the first snap, I assume, but still - we likely would have played a little more dynamically on offense with Hartman in. I'm not saying Newman was going through the motions and not saying he was just trying to avoid injury. I'm just saying he had a lot going on in his head.

I don't think as a coach you can anticipate this sort of thing, but it is what it is.

I do wish Jamie good fortune and will watching his next few years closely. I'll say it again, I think he will make a fine fine backup QB a la Jacoby Brissett. Frank Reich can teach everyone a thing or two about beling an elite backup QB. It's a great gig if you can get it.

I also think in a lot of ways, Jamie is doing Wake a favor here. Yes, we might have been better next year with Newman at QB, but our QB situation next year was going to be a distraction of some kind. Hartman has done everything asked this year. I think Clawson was facing a real dilemma next year of what was best for the team and what was fair to Newman and Hartman.

And one more time, Kern has a fucking cannon for an arm. Throws a 25 yard dart. Hartman and Newman don't come close to matching his velocity. He will be quite ready to walk into QB2 next year, I am sure of it.

I do hope that Bowers pulls a Hinton and comes back to Wake, graduates and does his one year after this one coming. He's going to have to sit next year anyway so his decision, I think, came before he knew what Newman was doing. He'll clearly be QB3 and you never know. Plus, he gets a Wake degree and can go play right away the following year. He loses nothing by returning and gains a Wake degree. Edited to add I guess he does lose two years of eligibility elsewhere

Hartman loves Wake and I think the kid is all heart. I've never gotten that feel with Jamie. Throw after throw inaccurate in the grass during the bowl Jamie just smiled and blowed it off like he didn't care whereas I think it would fire Sam up.

His is a dumb take. Yours is a bad take. There is a difference.

Yeah, Hartman is a real gym rat. Definitely scrappier than Jamie.

Donks are gonna donk. Sorry for the delay, bro. I was busy doing my job, mentoring young athletes, many of them black, and a few that will play in college.
