Totally Unofficial 2019/2020 Premier League Thread (NWT)

Wait, that wasn't an option before? Then why were the monitors even there?

I think that’s what a lot of clubs and managers were wondering.

The refs just kind of unilaterally decided to leave it all up to the VAR as far as I can tell. It’s weird. Now they have been encouraged to use it for potential red card offenses except for last man denying goal scoring opportunity, which will still be handled by VAR.

I remember when Liverpool lost in the FA Cup to West Brom the official went over to the monitor three or four times to review calls. It took forever.

The system can literally be so simple and quick.

Guys /Gals up in the booth say something innocuous to the CR like, "we saw something on at least one angle that we think you may want to take a look at."

Ref goes over to monitor and reviews incident in question from all available angles, not knowing the one previously mentioned.

Ref can then ask to view it again from certain angles (if undecided).

Ref can then overrule himself (and his ARs) or stand with decision on the field.

2 minutes tops.

And get rid of stupid offside lines and dots. Action happens too fast for that to be correct (with modern camera speeds) anyhow.

Especially for soccer, the goal should be to minimize the interruption to the game while overturning obvious errors. Give the VAR booth a 30 second clock. If they can’t decide to overturn a call in half a minute, it’s not a clear and obvious error. Play on.

Having the ref go over to the monitor is a recipe for 5 minute delays.

IMO, VAR shouldn't be used for offsides at all. It favors the defense to a ridiculous degree. Actually, I feel like it should solely be used for calls like potential RC/dangerous plays. Something the head official may not have seen properly. Otherwise it's a tool for calling back open play goals and giving PKs, both of which I wish there were less of. Give the attacker the benefit of the doubt on the break and the defender the benefit of the doubt in the box. VAR is against both.

I wish offsides was like a ball out in tennis where it was essentially instantaneous communicated tot he referee but I guess the technology isn’t quite there. Failing that it’s definitely the most frustrating break in play to sit around waiting to determine a millimeter of offsides. It’s worth waiting to see if a play is a red imo.

Either way, it's ludicrous to take every single open play goal and see if it can possibly be ruled out by millimeters before a call is made. Takes all the air out of the exciting moments. Anyway, y'all know all of this already. Maybe a challenge system would work. Guarantees only a few VAR breaks per match.

Cameras don't record fast enough to properly determine offside

1) players run faster than cameras do frames/second
2) people kick quicker than cameras can record frames/second

It's just a guessing game. So preposterous to ask technology not capable of a definitive answer to provide us one.

How many goals are there a match?

So challenges would be reserved for goals and same result.

Stands to reason, no?

Neither 1 nor 2 is true, cameras are far faster than any event on the pitch. But the dynamics of when the ball is played vs when the man is past the last defender is beyond simple “did the call cross this line” camera work. I think we agree though that the tech isn’t there.

Hi, TownieDeac! It's me, Math!

Just kidding. It's just me, dv7, speaking up in defense of mathematics.

Do you like math? I DO! And I hope you do too! It's wicked fun.

A top class footballer athlete runs at top speed of about 25 kilometers per hour. That, simplifying it down, is about 7 meters per second.

An HDTV camera records action at 50 frames per second OR about one frame every zero point zero two seconds (0.02s).

A player running at 25 kmph runs 138.8mm per second.

Remember this isn't even considering the speed in which a person can strike a ball with their foot. (faster than running, I don't believe anybody would disagree)

So both 1 AND 2 are true. And you are wrong (yet again).

Shall I go on?

lol incredible stuff man

speed cameras can capture a license plate at high definition at 119,000,000 mph

electron cameras can photograph dark material at the literal speed of light

but tell me more about how sky can’t keep track of a footballer at top speed, what with math and all

sorry, what?

just what the fuck?

football be damned. what the fuck?

I 8-2 see Ashley Young go, but it was definitely time for his stay at the club to end. Thanks for the memories, Ash.

Maur Brandon Williams now plz

I don’t hate to see Young go, mostly based on his play. I don’t think he offered anything positive to the team in terms of quality. Maybe there was a leadership/clubhouse thing, but he was a dramatic liability on defense in the recent past. And his unreasonably arrogant attitude was off putting to me. And while AWB is the unquestionable starter, I would like to see more Dalot. I don’t think he sucks.

I 8-2 tell you this, but my previous comment wasn't about the current Ashley Young.
