Danny Manning replacement search thread

In the 20 years before Wes UNCG was 260-337 (.436). That’s with 4 coaches including McCaffrey who was 90-87. It is a bad job. Wes is 90-35 the last 3.5 years there.

I don’t care who coaches at Clemson they will never dominate the ACC. UNCG is the Clemson of the SoCon. Winthrop is the UNC of the Big South. Apples and oranges to compare Marshall and Wes. Apples to apples to compare Marshall to Pat though.

I'm just saying that Wes without his Wake connections isn't even mentioned on this board.

The dynamic of the Southern Conference changed ALOT.

During those 20 years, Davidson and College of Charleston were the kings of SoCon basketball and now they are playing elsewhere.

Under the current composition of the SoCon, UNCG is one of the better programs. Certainly better than VMI, Citadel, WCU Samford and Mercer.

No reason it can't compete with Wofford, Furman, ETSU and Chattanooga. It's in a decent sized city and has a home gym and access to a big coliseum where most of the big time local schools like to play at UNCG.

Don't think so. This board has mentioned every semi-successful mid-major to low-major coach in the Carolinas and surrounding states (Bob Ritchie - Furman, Steve Forbes - ETSU, Earl Grant - Charleston, Pat Kelsey - Winthrop, Richie McKay - Liberty, Mike Rhoads - VCU). The fact that Wes Miller has a WF connection can be argued as either a benefit or a detriment, but the fact that his parents are WF supporters and that Wes grew up as WF fan is more a positive than a negative IMO. Regardless, any coach that is 96-30 over his last 4 years as a D-1 coach and is working 30 miles from WF's campus is at least going to get attention on this Board, whether they have a WF connection or not.

FWIW, I'm not saying Wes should get the WF job, but just that he should be vetted as a candidate, among many others. The AD, and whomever is assisting with the search, better leave no stone unturned to ensure that the best decision is made. For the most part, those that post here are limited in access to superficial information; so, we can argue about coaching resumes, but that just scratches the surface. Currie has essentially had a year to investigate, check references, talk to potential candidates, talk to former players, assistants, perform background checks, essentially crawl around in each candidates head, whatever else might help. Have faith he will make the right choice.

Strickland- who do you think we should hire? Who is in your top 3?

I want to wait and see how the season shakes out, but I liked the idea Steve Forbes, Craig Smith, and Mike Rhoades a lot.

Those guys would be on my list too (would be a little concerned about Smith's lack of connections east of the Mississippi River), but have hard time understanding why its ok to hire a coaching from "freaking ETSU", but not "freaking UNCG".

The previous coaching destination for current top 25 teams:

Baylor Scott Drew - Valpo -Baylor hired him after a MURDER in their program
Gonzaga Mark Few - Assistant Had been Top assistant in their program for 9/10 seasons
Dayton Anthony Grant - Fired from Bama Ass't at FL, built VCU program
San Diego State Brian Dutcher - Assistant ssociate HC at Michigan for TEN years. Then AHC at SDSU for 18 more
Seton Hall Kevin Willard - Iona Assistant with Celtics for 4 years, assistant at L'ville
Iowa Fran McCaffrey - Siena (before that UNCG) 11 years Assisant at ND)
Butler LaValle Jordan - UW-MilwaukeeAss't at -Butler, Iolwa and Michigan
Villanova Jay Wright - Hofstra Ass't at UNLV & Nova
Texas Tech Chris Beard - Ark Little Rock GA at Texas and Associate HC at TT
Rutgers Steve Pickell - Stony Brook one year UConn

In the ACC, State hired Keatts from UNCW, VT hired Young from Wofford, Clemson hired Brownell from Wright State. Hiring successful coaches from smaller schools is often the route to take.

Look, if WF can bring in Jon Beilein or Thad Matta, great, but not sure those are realistic options. FWIW, I could care less if the hire is popular. Only care that hire results in long-term success. If everyone is pissed about WF's next hire at the time that it is made, but WF is consistently an NCAA tourney program moving forward, that is all that matters.

As usual context is everything. As you can see, Pilch intentionally misled the board about who these coaches were when they got their big jobs. The only two who don't have more of a pedigree than HOF Wes are Drew (who took over after a murder and program problems) and Pikiell (Pilch got the name wrong) at a place that hasn't been in The Dance since 1991.

Few was the top assistant at the growing Gonzaga and was simply the logical promotion.

Portraying they came out of nowhere is totally disingenuous and misrepresenting who these guys were at the time.

Lots of unnecessary bile from RJ.

The quoted post listed the previous head coaching stops of several current head coaches of top 25. Some had never been a HC at all; some had limited experience at mid-majors. Never have claimed that good coaches "come out of nowhere". Yes, Wes Miller has not acted as an assistant coach at a Power 5 school, if that is a must have for the next WF job, then Wes Miller doesn't qualify. FWIW, Danny Manning was a Kansas assistant for six years and worked for the program for 9 in total. Jeff [name redacted] was an NBA and Power V college assistant for 20 years. That experience as an assistant hasn't translated into success for the WF basketball program.

Thanks for noting the spelling error. Hey, can you explain your issues with Clawson's PTO offense again?

What you did was tell half the story. It made each of those coaches look a lot weaker and you knew what you were doing. That's the problem.

As to PTO, I laughed about it at the time. OTOH, you shifted to whatabout RJ.

I've been following Miller's career and I'm just not impressed. The school itself doesn't matter as much as how he coaches and recruits. Frankly, I'm just not that impressed. Miller is doing well for UNCG, but well for UNCG isn't going to cut it at Wake. Compare Miller's resume with Forbes and I don't think it's really even close in terms of who is a better candidate for this job. But it's an opinion and opinions are like assholes, as they say, so take mine with a grain of salt.

I don't want the coach of UNCG. It's UNC fucking G. Like, if Miller's dad wasn't a rich Wake donor would any of y'all even think about this guy for a second? What has he done that suggests that he'll be successful at Wake? [Redacted] (Air Force) and Manning (Tulsa) won games in better jobs than Miller has ever had and were complete busts. I don't want the coach of Tulsa, let alone UNCG.

Let me ask this: why do you believe Wes Miller can win at Wake?

Actually, I am more skeptical of Wes Miller BECAUSE of his Wake Forest backgrounds. I wouldn’t want our relationship with Wake Forest and the Miller family to be tampered with if Miller doesn’t do well.

Wes has proven he’s a winner, he’s well spoken, and he knows his teams strengths and weaknesses and he’s willing to adjust with those. This year he’s said that he wants to use his deep bench, and athleticism to his advantage by putting pressure on the opposition. He has said that multiple times. That shows me immediately that he’s able to identify things, something the current HC cannot do.

Jay Wright was a Masamino assistant I believe.

I think WFU needs to look seriously at Steve Forbes from ETSU.
He just wins.

He’s a great coach, but I don’t think it would be a good fit. He has a JUCO background and still pulls a lot of players from JUCO programs. I just don’t see him working out at Wake.

There are 2 simple reasons why I don't think Miller will be a good coach:
1.A good ACC coach should dominate the Southern Conference. Dominate it. And Miller has just been good there, not great. He has been there 8 seasons. Throw out the first 3 and call it rebuilding (questionable, but let's cut the young man a break). He is still only 64-32 in conference over the 5+ years after he established the program, with 2 1st place finishes. Compare that to OGB's description of Gregg Marshall at Winthrop. Miller may be a good coach by Southern Conference standards, but nothing that indicates he will be a good coach by ACC standards; and
2) He has been there for 8+ years. If he was such a hot candidate, why has he not taken a better job? You are telling me that not one single athletic director in the A-10, the AAC, or even the MVC recognized Miller's prowess and offered him a raise to leave? UNCW picked an assistant coach (who sucked) over Miller.

Tip your hat to DR for convincing people of alternative facts by sheer force of will.

UNCW and UNCG is a (fairly) lateral move. He got a decent contract in 2018. Maybe that’s not big enough of a step to move away from UNCG.

He’s a great coach, but I don’t think it would be a good fit. He has a JUCO background and still pulls a lot of players from JUCO programs. I just don’t see him working out at Wake.

Cool story, except at Tennessee and Wichita State where he helped recruit 8 top-100 players. He's been scouting high school players since Adidas ABCD camp was a thing. BTW that same line of thinking really worked well with Nate Oats, who landed a 4* top 100 player his first year at Alabama.

like who? i'm serious - there aren't that many. i also like mike rhoades and steve forbes as options, but i think wes's ties to wake actually work against him as a candidate

You're probably a lot more up on this than I am at this stage. We've been making lists on here since 2011, buckets, and we all (myself included) say who we like on those lists. I don't claim to possess any special knowledge or anything and I haven't watched a minute of Wake this year, but the single track focus on Wes is just kind of absurd. I'll see myself out...

For about twenty years I was really into Wake Forest basketball recruiting. I haven't paid any attention in a couple years. I do know, though, that a lot of the guys that y'all constantly claim won't be good fits because they have [x] recruiting weakness beat us (and will continue to beat us) for recruits down the line.

for all the hype around steve forbes... don't ETSU and UNCG have about the same record since 2017? and wes is from NC, no scandals, and 18 years younger

i'm just not sure how wes can be an absurd suggestion but steve forbes is a totally legit candidate

Duh, because he has WF connections. That's a non-starter for some on this board. Whereas it is perhaps an asset at most other places, not for the most self-loathing fan base around.
