Danny Manning replacement search thread

Let's just hire this guy and get it over with.

FWIW, Bob Richey at Furman is also quite intriguing.

36 years old and is in his 3rd very successful season at Furman.

You could argue that Niko Medved did the heavy lifting at Furman (from 342 to 106 over 4 years), but Richey has taken them to new heights.

Watched a few youtube videos with him and he's impressive on Xs & Os, as well as just answering questions postgame (low bar here at Wake after Bz & Manning).

What do we legitimately know about this buyout?

I’ve heard people say we have the money for the buyout and we’re just waiting. Yet, others have said we cannot fire Danny until we find this money.

I know it is kept private. But does anyone have any true knowledge or inside scoop about this disaster?

2/15 @Miami
2/19 vs GT
2/25 vs Duke
2/29 vs Notre Dame
3/3 @UNC
3/6 @NC State
3/10 ACC Tourney

What will our record be to finish the year? I’m thinking 13-19 (6-15) with 2/3 wins to Miami, GT, and UNC. Obviously followed by a first round exit in the tourney. What record do you think seals the deal for Manning being canned, or do you think he’s already done? I’m scared a few more wins might keep him in Winston..

Manning will be back next year. There has been some fractional progress in play quality and recruiting, enough to give Currie cover to give Manning one more year, make Currie look "reasonable" and also let that buyout burn down one more year. If an obvious great hire isn't available that will give Currie all the more reason, in his mind, to wait.

Don't get me wrong, I think Manning is a failure and should be let go immediately, with an interim to finish out the season, but Currie seems like a lace curtain type. I don't think he will move on this until the end of next season for what he believes are appearance purposes and to save money on the buyout. As I said on another thread, invest your emotions elsewhere. Wake basketball will not be revived in the near future.

I hope I'm wrong...

Wake is a tourny team this year with competent coaching. Yes, you read that right. Sarr, Chaundee, Andrien, etc are all very good players. Depth is a problem but they've managed that well.

Next year, Wake could easily be a tournament team as well with competent coaching. Maybe a strong 2020-2021 season doesn't impact near term recruiting, maybe it does. But canning Manning now and getting a good coach sets Wake up for a return to relevancy next year. The year after, the talent drops off significantly.

Agree with this. Should get consideration.

I really think Wake needs to hire a young coach. There is little left to preserve as a program.

Wake needs someone with the energy and staying power to build this program for the long haul.

bigboy8 has the scoop and his source has been spot on to date. Did you send him a pm yet to ask for the info?

Our current upperclassmen aren't exactly the '95 Bulls, but Childress, Johnson, and White will definitely be gone after this year; and I wouldn't be shocked if Sarr (European league or grad transfer), Chaundee (Int'l league or grad transfer), and Wright (transfer) also move on.

Speaking of Paul Hewitt, I bought a ticket out front of Cameron Monday in the top row corner. My seat was right next to him.

I think 2 more wins get DM another year. Hope I am wrong. I would take anyone over the arrogant DM

It's always my favorite thing when someone posts a contrarian opinion with nothing but a vague thought process to back it up, then follows it up with "I hope I'm wrong..."

The majority here think that the most likely outcome is that DM will not be retained. There's some that seem to enjoy thinking that the sky is constantly falling, and I'm sure that their numbers will swell if we win 2-3 more games this year. We had to hold a press conference last year to justify keeping our coach, and he has a losing record with a relatively easy non-conf schedule and a very, very down ACC. Let's relax.

Can you imagine an athletic department that actually functions this way? Who gives a shit what the win total ends up? Wake is going to end up at best in the bottom half of a 4 bid league. The season sucked, no argument can be made against that. If Currie is sitting there saying 2 more & he stays, then shut the whole thing down today.
