Danny Manning replacement search thread

I'm not sure Bobby Hurley would be interested in Wake, but he has had some success at ASU and Buffalo. While I am no Pac-12 expert, I do not consider ASU to be a top tier program in that conference, but he has steadily improved that program. The last two full seasons plus this season he is 62-31 if my math is right.

He currently makes about $2.5 mill at ASU and would think he would like to get back east in the league he came up in! Would think we could pay him at least $3 mill per.

WTF?? I would rather see Wake burn down the Joel and discontinue the program than sully the names of all the Deac greats with that floor-slapping bastard.

You might be the only person capable of making a worse decision than Ron Wellman.

HELL NO.

If we had hired Hurley 10 years ago and he had failed just as badly as Bz and Manning, at least we would have gotten to watch him suffer.

I actually like Hurley. Seems like an all right dude. He was starting to become an effective NBA player when he was in that wreck.

That's a half game better than 61-31, which we know is a fireable record at MSD.

I always got the feeling that the K/Hurley relationship was a little rocky, and that he wasn't as chummy with K as most of the other Duke players that have treid to coach. As a result, Hurley wouldn't top my list, but he is not the automatic non-starter like Wojo would be.

Hurley and Wojo are thriving in hoops outposts. They’ll both have their teams back in the dance. We missed on those two.

Apart from the Duke connection, Wojo to me is an OK head coach. He has coached Marquette for six seasons, been two NCAA tournaments and lost badly twice in their first game. His teams also often collapse late in the season:

- 0-2 in the NCAAs (losing the 7/10 game to S. Carolina by 20; losing as 5 seed to #12 Murray State by 19).
- 1-3 in the Big East Quarters; never reached the Big East Final
- Last year, Marquette was 23-4 on February 23rd; they finished 24-10 (106)
- This year, Marquette is in the midst of another late season stumble (lost 3 in a row).

On the totally subjective eye test, Marquette does not look a well-coached outfit.

Wojo has not had the same success at Marquette as either Buzz Williams or Tom Crean. Not saying Wojo is incompetent, but he is just OK.

No coach from any non power 6 conference will have recruited 5 star players. No decent power 6 coach is moving to Wake without a boatload of cash.

Wake gets a 5 star player about once a decade if we are lucky.

Wait, weren't we "lucky" to have gotten 5* Ty Walker?

I just threw up in my mouth. Hurley?:wtftard:

Yes Bobby Hurley. Doing a helluva job out at Arizona State! He has them on top the PAC-12 at 10-4 and they are 19-5 overall. Right now he is making about $2.5 mill so he is affordable.

There is probably only one coach that can turn this thing around quickly that we could actually likely land.

Rick Pitino.

So much this.

Agree on Wojo. Moot point anyway, as Marquette is a better job than Wake right now.

I’m not overly impressed w/ Hurley out at Az State, either. He’s engineered a nice turnaround over the last 5 years there, but this is only his 2nd winning season in the Pac-12. It’s not like they were awful with Herb before Bobby Hurley showed up.

More impressed with Danny Hurley attempting time fix the dumpster fire at UCONN.

Just OK is not OK.

Wake gets a 5 star player about once a decade if we are lucky.

There are several coaches mentioned who have spent time ad assistant coaches at P6 programs and are now head coaches at non P6 schools. Its not just five stars. It is also the almost 5 star high 4 star guys too.

Wake recruits more than one 5 star per decade. Success is about one per decade. That needs to go up. IMHO, a coach who has been there and done it, even as an assistant, is more likely to succeed than somebody who is learning in the fly.
