Danny Manning replacement search thread

Do you know who has just as good of a college HC record as Russell Turner? Travis DeCuire at Montana. They're the same age and DeCuire has a better win percentage and he's poised to make his third dance in a row this year. Neither would be an exciting hire. The only reason why anyone is talking about Turner is because he coached here two decades ago. I honestly don't understand the infatuation with anyone who has some tie to Wake.

The only hire with Wake ties that would be exciting is Mack and (channeling my inner DR) that ship sailed when we missed our chance to hire him in 2014.

I think infatuation is a bit strong. I simply brought up his name, as he is someone we are sort of familiar with and have discussed recently. I do not see anyone advocating strongly for him.

At the risk of sounding like I'm defending [Redacted] (I am not!), part of his problem was how badly he lost that press conference. He never recovered. The fact that he was also an awful person and a loser was a bigger problem, but the guy never stood a chance absent some pretty immediate results.

I really don't think anyone would say you're defending [Redacted].

There are two factors at play:

- The level of excitement of the hire (winning the press conference)
- The actual impact of the hire (winning games and turning around a listless program).

The first factor really is not important once the games start again next fall. WF could hire Tom Izzo, and we all would be thrilled and excited, but if the next 10 years look like the last 10 years that initial excitement would be meaningless.

We could hire Les Robinson (who is now 77 and last worked as the interim AD at Lander University), and obviously, everyone would hate the hire, but if WF made its first final 4 in 50 years in 2022 with old "ACC Play-in Game" Les, the initial furor after the hire would be meaningless.

So, at the end of the day, whether everyone loves the hire or hates the hire or is apathetic about the hire, none of it mattes. The only thing that matters is winning games, becoming a regular participant in the NCAA tournament, and getting excited on gameday against Duke, because everyone believes WF can win.

Part me hopes that Currie hires someone that EVERYONE HATES initially. Simply because that means that Currie didn't care about winning the press conference, but made the hire because he committed to the belief that the next coach will turn around WF basketball, even if WF fractured and pessimistic fanbase initially objected

100% agree with your posts about “winning the press conference” not being important, but we’ve been discussing options for 2+ years now.

There are just guys that I don’t want.

After Bz and Manning, I feel entitled to a little excitement.

I don’t care if any of you other assholes are excited by the hire... To me, I’m the only asshole that matters.

Turner was born and raised in VA. ACC country. DeCuire is from Seattle and played at Montana.

Turner has been an assistant in the ACC and Pac 10. DeCuire the Pac-10 and Colonial conference.

Turner was an NBA assistant (for the Warriors) and has coached hoop in Turkey, Lithuania and China (international recruiting) as part of the NBA's outreach program. DeCuire has never affiliated with an NBA team or coached abroad.

Montana made the NCAA tournament ten times before DeCuire took the job there (his alma mater).

UC-Irvine had no basketball success before Turner took the job. He is the only coach to take UCI to the NCAAs (and he has won a game in the tournament).

Turner would not be my first choice, but the guy has coached at all of the key levels of basketball, and took over a program with a total of 3 NIT bids in its basketball history (no NCAA bids) and has built the best program in the Big West Conference (they will again win the Big West regular season, and be the #1 seed in the conference tourney - so, he is taking UCI to the NCAAs or NIT again). Turner has a solid resume, and connections at all levels of basketball. The fact that he has a WF connection is nice, but at best, a minor factor why he is a candidate.

It would be nice to have somebody win the press conference for us in basketball after a decade of meh. I love listening to Dave Clawson's press conferences. Is it so wrong to wish that we could have somebody like that on the basketball-side of things?

That would clearly be the #1 job open this cycle, unless Roy, K, Boeheim, or some other old fogey decides to hang it up.

That makes me wonder something off topic:
Roy retiring seems sorta possible, given the year the Holes have had. (I actually bet against it happening; but let's assume it does)
What if Roy decides really late in the year, like ~August-late~ , to retire? Says "my hearts' not in it anymore", can't connect with the young'ns, etc.
Obviously, they'd have to go with an interim coach, right? So, who would that be? Steve Robinson maybe? I highly doubt they'd be able to make a hire that late, besides I think the Hole donors would flip if they tried to. I wonder who they'd go with?

Love Clawson's pressers too. Is there a breakdown of which candidates have the best and worst press conferences?

Turner or DeCuire or Bob Richey may have exciting press conferences, but not sure if any would constitute exciting hires.

Possible, but the conventional wisdom is that Roy isn't going to go out on a 11-21 note. He has a strong recruiting class coming. The best guess is that he may leave next year if the Heels have a turn around season.

That said, amazing that anyone here thinks that there won't be some unexpected openings after this season. Happens every year. Someone will unexpectedly retire, head to the NBA or undergo a sex change to join the LPGA tour. Inevitable. There is almost no chance that WF will be the most attractive open job. FWIW, I am predicting right now that if KS wins the Natty, Bill Self leave college basketball (before more transgressions get public) and head to the NBA or to television.

The idea that Turner is boring isn’t accurate. He is actually a pretty charismatic guy. Signed a bunch of high level recruits at both Wake and Stanford. His resume is actually pretty similar to Forbes except that Forbes is a juco guy who has some baggage while Turner has been at 2 elite academic schools and understands how to recruit in our environment. Plus NBA experience. He wouldn’t be a LOWF hire.

I think Shaka and Forbes sit atop the presser rankings for the board-floated candidates

Stanford had a coaching vacancy four years ago and went with Jerrod Hasse of UAB/Unc/Kansas. Seems like Turner would have been a natural fit for them.

Forbes gave a great presser at ETSU. He is my guy at this point. At least he would be entertaining.

His wife Liz went to Wake Med School and was in school out at Stanford so it is possible he could not move for a while. Now she is a critical care physician for Kaiser Permanente. She would fit in well at the Wake Forest medical campus also! So we would get a great "two-fer".

HATCH FUCKED RON TURNER'S WIFE!!!!

Oh, I totally think and agree they'll be some unexpected openings. I just personally doubt it'd be Roy Boy.
In fact, I second your idea that Self leaves. Feel like that's the "real" unexpected opening to happen. My only quibble would be that he still might be forced out with or without winning the Natty this year.

At this point, I'm absolutely skeptical that Ol' Danny learned any damn thing at all at blue blood Kansas.

And that has been one of the unpleasant surprises. At Kansas, Danny had a reputation as as a developer of big men. John Collins went from three star to near lottery pick in two years and many thought that would continue at Wake, but Collins has been the only big guy who showed great improvement. Puzzling.

Both Doral Moore and Sarr improved significantly while at WF. Not sure how much was attributable to Manning as opposed to the natural progression from a teenager to a 21 year-old. FWIW, Ody has excellent athletic ability and decent size. Expect major improvements from him regardless of who is coaching WF moving forward.

We need a good fit for WFU. Miller, Kelsey and Turner would fit. Just fire Manning and hire one of this trio.

Coach Odom brought in Rodney and Randolph right off the bat. Who can bring in top talent immediately is my top concern.
