Danny Manning replacement search thread

I really want to believe RJ and his source. I just can’t see RJ fabricating a story about him having a Grade 1 source, but who knows at this point.

I realize RJ has a history that makes older posters prone to dismiss anything he says and all. [ *eye roll* ] I wasn't around on those old days, so I don't know. However.
I also recognize he's prone to histrionics. He's just doing him, I guess.
That disclaimer out of the way, I'll play Devil's Advocate for a second. Here goes:

RJ is old, right? It *COULD* be possible (I stress "could ") he, somewhere along the line, befriended one of the larger donors. Maybe even one of "grade 1" level; this guy's probably really more like "grade 1.5" or lower, but he's got cash and FANCIES himself *in the know*. And, maybe he is, who knows?
Regardless, he and RJ believe that he is.
If, IF, all that has been said by RJ is true, this guy... let's call him Deep Throat from now on... would seem to be onto something.

RJ has repeatedly claimed/insinuated that Deep Throat has claimed the buyout isn't as big or fully guaranteed as Goodman reported. Supposedly because that $18 mil figure is inflated by incentives which, being incentives, were not guaranteed.However.
I'd have to point out though, they're seemingly *NOT REACHED THUS FAR*. That would actually be a huge point to take note of.
Remember Sportsnut's source said negotiations have stalled? Well here's a theory that might explain both:
We have the cash to buy Danny's ass out.
BUT.
I think it's entirely possible Danny's side is firmly dug in on getting those non-guaranteed incentive bucks. Note the how he keeps claiming "we're reaching goals" and "we're taking steps forward?" I'd bet Danny's trying to claim he's meeting/met the incentives. Knowing Wellman's dumb ass he quite possibly put in a bunch of asinine vague "culture"-based goals and that's what's making everything grind up. Danny apparently either wants that incentive money "he's earned" included in a buyout OR leave him alone to finish "earning" them for the rest of his contract.
I dunno. But, that's my RJ's Devil's Advocate Bullshit Fan Fiction Theory.
Is it spot on? I don't know. Does it make some possible sense? I could see it at least. Does RJ have a Deep Throat? Someone in West Hollywood possibly knows.
Anyway, I didn't mean to write a book, so I apologize for the long post.

That makes sense.

The dude wrote and published a book full of made up stories about his life. His "inside info" about all past coaching searches has been wrong.

Why do I care what the Duke Basketball Report thinks we should do? That site is garbage... And Duke hasn’t had a coaching search in more than 30 years.

It’s like asking the Palestinians who they think should be elected PM of Israel.

You can argue with DBR. It may turn out they are dead wrong about whether Wes Miller ought be offered the WF job. Maybe Wes takes the job and fails. That's a valid debate. What is not ok is the concept espoused here that Miller is not in the discussion for the UNC job and is not well respected along Tobacco Road as an option for Wake. I read it here from folks who are no longer part of the ACC--they live in Washington, California and in the great irrelevant ACC outpost of Charlotte. Folks in Charlotte are certainly fine advocating we hire John Beilein. That's fine. But don't say the league regulars along the ACC corridor aren't considering Miller as a strong candidate for both the UNC and Wake jobs. They are.

Everyone keeps saying he wrote a book. I figured he wrote a coloring book.

Did RJ bankrupt Barnes and Noble?

Didn’t realize HOF Wes has a brother on the UNC basketball team until last night. Gross. Do not want Wes Miller.

I was told that “Currie has heard” what alumni and the fan base are saying and knows apathy has replaced anger. Most are certain he’ll make a change soon, but I feel like this is being said with hope instead of confidence.

This is a rational position, DR. You feeling ok this morning, bro?

What's to say Duke wouldnt fuck up a coaching search. If there was an internet when Coach K was hired, DBR would look just like this board in year 2/3 of his tenure.

No it's not. League regulars don't decide who our next coach will be. Our AD does.

I didn’t say (nor imply) that they did. Only Wake’s stewards are responsible for Wake’s success or (like the last 23 years) failure.

My post about DBR’s reporting only responds to those who continue to say that my preference for Miller is some outlandish outlier. It’s not. It’s mainstream. For those still part of the ACC.

No one has accused of that.
But just because something is mainstream has little bearing on whether or not it's a good idea.

If the Holes were going to make a change, would it be a Roy retirement (thus a settlement)? Roy is owed nearly 9 million in buyout funds. Surely AD won't fire based on 1 bad year but who knows.

They are not going to fire a coach who has won three championships, went to the Sweet 16 last year, and has the No. 3 recruiting class with three 5-star recruits locked up because they sucked this year. UNC will be towards the top of the conference again next year. Is it possible that Roy decides to hang it up? Sure, but the AD is not going to force him out after this year.

I don’t think anyone is necessarily disagreeing with the position that Miller should be on the list. He’s the absolute floor in my opinion. Acceptable enough when a situation calls for more than just acceptable.

The blowback you keep getting on Miller stems from the fact you keep doubling down on your claims we should have hired Miller 10 years ago, when he was an assistant at High Point with 2 years of coaching experience. Clearly you’re not serious about that it’s the most ridiculous thing conceivable. But the fact you keep making the claim totally ruins your credibility with any other position you take. Stop being such a shit head about how Wake fans suck and you’re smarter than the rest of us and your points may get some traction around here.
