Manning Buyout Negotiations Have Begun

This could be completely wrong, but I have a small concern that the coronavirus circumstance could impact WF's ability to buyout Manning and bid for a new coach. Stating the obvious, hard to imagine a more uncertain economy for the foreseeable future, and if the NCAA tourney is canceled, that also means a lot less money going to the NCAA and the member schools. Just saying that a month ago, the environment was far more conducive to passing the hat around to buyout Manning and pay big money for another coach. Today, not sure the deep-pocketed donors are as ready to stroke seven figure checks until they understand how all of this will playout.

IIRC, Shah makes his money in the hospitality industry (hotels) and Sutton in the sports broadcast industry. The current financial forecast for those two industries doesn't look so great in the near term.

Hopefully it’s completed soon because it’s going to be really awkward when John Beilein shows up and Danny is refusing to leave.

Just give manning his stapler and send him on his way.

Don’t wait, new coach can go on recruiting trip and visit each player to do his sales job in person to meet parents also. No brainer

Oh no! Coronavirus could potentially interrupt a predetermined conclusion made prior to the outbreak!

On the flip side, if all of the spring sports have the rest of their seasons cancelled, then the AD would save quite a bit on not having to pay for travel, lodging, meals, etc. I'm sure the amount saved wouldn't come close to the full Manning buyout or lost revenue if there were not any payouts from the tournaments, but at least it wouldn't be unmitigated.

Good post—have the same general concern.

Hmmm. But if you are Shah or Sutton, wouldn't you have put this money aside for this at the latest a month ago? But I hear you. I could even see messaging from Hatch come down to put a hold on any decision until X date.

Hoping Shah and Sutton invested in Zoom stock last week (video chat service).

Also stock market in general has been in free fall lately. Anybody who was planning to cash out some stock investment to help fund the buy out has a smaller position to work from.

Right, but what I am saying is that if you saw your stock portfolio go up 25-35% over the past 12 months, and you have been contact with Currie since January about this, do you just luckily pull out the several million you have committed into your FUCK WELLMAN account in preparation to move it to Currie shortly? I argued this as a positive reason that Manning will be bought out a month or two ago before all this - the fact that the stock market has been so gonzo would benefit our likelihood of buying out Manning...

Seems like a lot of meetings for something pretty straightforward. If Manning is entitled to the buyout and not open to compromise then we have zero leverage. So we either have the money to do it or not. I can see some negotiation around structuring the payouts but it doesn’t seem like that would take several days.

Or the flip side: I'll just let the money continue to grow in the stock market until Currie calls and says he is ready to use it. Now all the gains are wiped out.

Maybe you did but maybe you also lost a shit ton of the remaining money this month and don't exactly want to put your money in Danny Manning's pockets.

The players are back home or on vacation right now. There won’t be any face to face meetings with the players and Currie/Manning/New Coach for at least a few weeks. Might fire Manning Monday or Tuesday and wait a week or 2 to announce the new coach. We shall see.

I'll gladly let them use our conference call line at no charge to call the players if that will help.

All the billion Wake just finished collecting has lost value. The part for Danny is gone. Sad news for those hoping to use it for that.

Yeah but a lump sum payout while the market is down has more value now too.

I guess once they cancel the NCAAT we can't say Manning failed to reach the 2020 tournament

No way Manning gets fired while all of this is going on.

Perfect excuse to let things ride.

“Here, Danny. Take this $12M instead of $15M. It’s a good time to buy.”

Yeah. I don’t think that will work.

This doesn’t set up well to get rid of Manning unless Currie has the cash in hand. But if that was the case, there wasn’t much to negotiate.
