Manning Buyout Negotiations Have Begun

No coincidence that the highest rated team to make a coaching change is UAB (#189). No coincidence that Jon Beiliein is available and seemingly wants to return to college basketball yet no one has hired him. Big money is not available for the big schools to make new multi-million dollar commitments.

Last year, there were 58 college programs that changed coaches. 11 Power Six schools changed coaches. So far, this year, 16 programs have fired their coaches (and none had a large guaranteed financial commitment to the coach getting canned), and no Power 6 schools has terminated its coach. Like almost every entity at the moment, colleges are hurting financially and the big time donors that can usually be counted on are conserving their resources. The situation totally sucks, but for those claiming that WF should "just come up with the cash" are failing to understand the current reality.

Agreed. It sucks big time. As much as I want Manning gone, I don't see it happening this year with whats taking place.

THERE IS HANDWRITING ON A SLIP OF PAPER UNDER THE MENU

I think it's the early version of his release to the press

somebody do some analysis of this pronto

Good for you for supporting local businesses, Currie, but honestly I don't get how you think it's okay to tweet about random things when you know people are waiting on your comments about much more important matters. The restaurant will be okay if you wait till next week to tweet about it. Go silent to demonstrate your seriousness about your only job duty at this moment.

Either he's a bit clueless - I will lean to this side - or he's got a bit of that Wellman-esque arrogance which causes him not to respect the dwindling fan base he's got left. Because at some point you have to ask yourself, why am I still caring about any of this?

So what is his excuse for the prior 10 months when said cash was readily available? It is nobody but Currie's fault that Manning was not fired well before the virus outbreak. Shit or get off the pot.

FWIW, not that anyone has ever defended the idiotic WF/Manning 2017 contract extension, but this situation is among the billion reasons why long term guaranteed contracts are unbelievably stupid - -particularly when at the time of the 2017 commitment, it's not like DM had demonstrated a long-term track record of success or like any other school was trying to hire him. Not saying WF should've anticipated the coronavirus, but the unexpected happens and now WF is the only one bearing the risk for that unexpected event, and will continue to bear that risk during what could be a long term financial crisis.

Sure. If Currie knew before anyone else that coronavirus was going to tank the world economy, he would've corned the market on Purell, and used the cash from a desperate population to fund the buy-out, but he didn't takeover the AD job until after last school year ended, and while not impossible to make a May or June coaching change (plus, it appears that Currie did not have Hatch's support to make a change after last season), most of the hottest coaching candidates from last year's carousel had already moved. It was defendable for Currie to use his first year on the job to find the best candidate(s) and work with the donors to seal the buyout. Could be completely wrong, but I think that was the plan in place until the world changed right when the season was ending.

The biggest decision in Wake sports for Currie is to fix the bball program, he has been here 11 months, wtf has he been doing?? its nobody but his fault, he can raise say 6-7 million and then go get a loan for another 6 million? that doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out. thats incompetence on Currie’s part, Shit or get off the pot.

As someone who has fired more than my share of people, you never wait to fire someone that you know is going to be fired. There is no perfect day to do it - there are always concerns about "who is going to replace them", "how do we get their work done", "what is the severance", etc., you can come up with excuses all day long why it isn't a good time to fire someone. So the correct answer is that you do it as soon as you justifiably know it is never going work out and you sort out the consequences later, whatever they are. Keeping them longer than necessary only breeds more toxicity and simply increases the complexity of the consequences, which is exactly what has happened here. Currie has majestically failed HR 101. He has had 11 months to do and didn't pull the trigger because of this excuse or that excuse when anyone with a brain knew it wasn't working out, and now we are likely stuck with this shitshow for yet another year. Complete failure on his part.

Absolute worst-case scenario was that he fires Manning, doesn't pay the buyout, and let the lawyers sort it out in a year or two and settle for some amount on the dollar. That happens EVERY DAMN DAY, yet he has been too much of a pussy to take a stand, and now we are stuck here.

There is only one obstacle to firing Manning and that is the buyout money, if Currie hasnt figured that out then he’s not doing his job. Shit or get off the pot.

Fresh capese & sandwich is an anagram for "Firing Manning Soon"

OK... That's not true. But I've got nothing over here.

I will say, however, that I'm only checking these boards / Twitter like once every couple of hours today instead of the every 15 minutes of last week.

Feels like nothing is going to happen and I'm just ignoring my future rage. Call it denial, I guess.

Never would have guessed that VT would have the 2nd highest percentage. I'd like to see more info for each school such as # of seats reserved for students, population within 75 miles of campus, season tickets sold, etc.

My guess is a good as anyone's but I feel if Manning was staying it would have been announced already.
Having said that what advantage would it have to announce a new coach NOW, other than to satisfy this message board? Wake currently has maintained, I think, it's recruiting class. I don't think a coach can have much interaction with any recruits right now so it would be difficult to "sway" a recruit to stay if they wanted to leave because Manning would be leaving. If I had to be honest it would probably work our better for Wake if they waited until the Corona thing died down then announce a new coach and he can immediately start swooning the recruits and current players.
Just a thought.

I tried to read into the Manicotti. Nothing.
