Again they've been on the cruise ship since before the US government gave advisory not to cruise, March 8th. The cruise was meant to end in Chile March 15th but Chile wouldn't accept them. Since, they've been sailing country to country for over 2 weeks being denied entrance while at least 4 people have died and dozens infected. Fortunately, DeSantis seems to have removed his head from his ass, or was forced to, and excused himself by saying he didnt realize there were Floridians or Americans on board, as if other nationalities' lives aren't worth it. Local hospitals have said they can handle the impact. For a state that generates so much off cruise ships you'd think he would at least understand the economic impact of burying his tourists at sea.

I feel like a jerk. I’ve been really frustrated by so many people acting so irresponsibly and selfishly. I assumed this cruise left port in the last week or two. I spoke out of ignorance and shouldn’t have. Thank you for correcting me.

So FL Gov DeSantis believes coronavirus may have spread two months ago at the Super Bowl in Miami (that was only two months ago?), but he's only issuing a stay-at-home order now and it doesn't include churches.

he's such a jackass. How can you not get it at this point? Florida is already top 5 in number of cases per state and it's just getting ramped up there. If the White House has to start telling you to get serious about Covid-19, then you are waaaaay behind.

Same here.

Also, at no time do I think cruise passengers shouldn't be allowed to disembark. I just think anyone who sailed into this mess would be a fucking moron. I'm glad to be wrong on this.

Nah. You were right the first time. These people are morons. The infected cruise ship in Japan had been news for weeks before this cruise.

People who got on this ship were either willfully ignorant or personally negligent.

Not at all, I read a couple articles that didnt give any details about when it set sail or who was on board. No big deal.

Yep. We discussed cruises on the Pit Coronavirus thread around the same time this ship left port. You didn’t need a travel advisory to know, on March 7, that getting on a cruise was incredibly irresponsible.

From the Port Everglades website:

What is the ship’s original Itinerary?
The ship was originally scheduled to arrive at Port Everglades on April 7 at the end of a 31-day cruise that originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina on March 7, and made stops along the coast of South America. Holland America has confirmed that 411 passengers were booked on the 31-day cruise. The remaining passengers were booked on shorter segments, including a 14 day cruise that was scheduled to end in San Antonio, Chile. Since the cruise was terminated before arriving at San Antonio, all those passengers remain on the ship. After arriving at Port Everglades on April 7, the ship was scheduled to go into dry dock for two weeks, then return to Port Everglades to leave for Canada on the first leg of its repositioning cruise on April 21.

How many passengers and where are they coming from?
There are 1,243 passengers aboard the Zaandam, including 305 U.S. citizens and 247 Canadians. There are 49 Florida residents on board, including several Broward County residents.

How long has Holland America Line been a customer of Port Everglades?
Holland America Line has been a primary customer for Port Everglades since the mid-1930s. Further the Zaandam was christened at Port Everglades by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in May 2000.

This cruise season, October 2019 through May 2020, Holland America had 11 cruise ships scheduled to sail from Port Everglades, including Zaandam.

How much do we receive in income from Holland America?
In Fiscal Year 2019 (October 1, 2018 through September 30, 2019), Holland America generated more than $8 million in revenue for Port Everglades from its 129 cruise sailings with 459,194 passengers.

It's not a coincidence that the day after the Trump admin acknowledges that we may have 100-240k American deaths, that the Trump admin and its cronies immediately begin contending that China faked its numbers (see Pence interview, intelligent report, likely incoming FoxNews blowhard takes, your take).

China may or may not have faked its numbers, but it was apparent this was an issue months ago and that China had locked down massive cities.

Yeah you literally have no intel capabilities if you are blaming fake China #s in not being prepared. Anyone with access to youtube could see in Jan. the myriad of videos of Wuhan blowing up with infection, rest of country being put on shutdown, reports of crematories running overtime in Wuhan, chinese drs. warning early how bad it was, etc. Heck I was buying n95 masks/other supplies for family before I realized there would be a mass shortage for those in need (and just for the record offering ours to family/friend drs. now that we are in lock down and not at risk like others on front line)

Maybe I should go into intel as clearly a very low bar now.

My ex wife took my older daughter on a Cruise from Florida to the Bahama from March 9th-March 14th, then we self quarantined form them until just last Saturday. Every one seems fine and there are no reports of any infections from that cruise, that we can find, but who knows given testing rates and contact tracing capabilities. They left the day after the State Department issued a statement warning American not to go on Cruise ships. I would have been so fucking pissed off if they had been forced to stay on the boat off shore or something.

How big a threat people perceived from CV19 on March 7 probably has a lot to do with where they get their news.
Feb. 29: “And I’ve gotten to know these professionals. They’re incredible. And everything is under control. I mean, they’re very, very cool. They’ve done it, and they’ve done it well. Everything is really under control.” — Trump in a speech at the CPAC conference outside Washington, D.C.

March 4: “[W]e have a very small number of people in this country [infected]. We have a big country. The biggest impact we had was when we took the 40-plus people [from a cruise ship]. … We brought them back. We immediately quarantined them. But you add that to the numbers. But if you don’t add that to the numbers, we’re talking about very small numbers in the United States.” — Trump at a White House meeting with airline CEOs.

March 4: “Well, I think the 3.4% is really a false number.” — Trump in an interview on Fox News, referring to the percentage of diagnosed COVID-19 patients worldwide who had died, as reported by the World Health Organization. (See our item “Trump and the Coronavirus Death Rate.”)

March 7: “No, I’m not concerned at all. No, we’ve done a great job with it.” — Trump, when asked by reporters if he was concerned about the arrival of the coronavirus in the Washington, D.C., area.

I mean...seriously? We're doomed.

Best time to get this is probably June 10. Hopefully you get a mild case. Hospitals will be emptying out but everyone still on high alert. Then, you should be immune for the summer and the new wave in the fall.
