2020 Democratic Presidential Primary

not sure where else to put it but h,ilariously, days after running a piece about why we should dump originalism the Atlantic runs two pro-originalism pieces, concurrently

This reminds me of RJ's recent post, "Hey Townie, you want a good laugh ?"

CJ! We finished watching WW for the first time about a month and half ago and man do we miss it.

That being said Jeb Bartlett was a sneaky bad POTUS. Left Santos with a flaming bag of shit. Also probably should have been impeached for the whole MS thing.

If we're being honest.

What’s the big deal with the NY State Legislature today?

A couple months after they reformed cash bail they changed their minds cause cops complained. So now during this coronavirus crisis they’re gonna be throwing a lot more people in jail. Again, cause cops got mad.

Everyone's new favorite Democratic candidate has been shitty on the issue too.

hmm not totally sure.

if I had to guess I'd say mostly the frequency. partially the desire they express for an old "normal." it seems like innocent rhetoric, but it's lazy at best and nefarious at worst. with this tweet, for example, i'd argue that Millhiser is implicitly normalizing the racism of Fox in 2008 by favorably comparing it to today. it wasn't alright then either, but that's not addressed in that tweet or the replies at all. further, the damn tweet has 50k likes right now! it's an easy way to get some quick rt/likes.

i'm all about some criticism for the speed of the modern news cycle, but this repetition compulsion in posting about the tan suit or reaching over the sneeze guard in 2014 isn't it.

i guess tldr: instead of the tan suit (or whatever rhetorical artifact chosen) rightfully being read as a racially charged topos, it functions primarily as nostalgia for (mostly white, mostly media!) commentators to criticize Trump's command of the current news cycle. race is mostly elided here (unless you fill in a lot of the blanks yourself).

I guess. I typically read statements as a criticism of the absurd conservative media and the way the media cycle is skewed towards white male grievance politics whether coming from out of power Republicans or Trump and in power Republican.

I see it as how bad the current state is compared to the ridiculous past state.
