2020 Democratic Presidential Primary

Warren would be a fine pick as long as we have assurances that her seat would be replaced by a Democrat. Related note how the fuck does Massachusetts elect a republican governor.

Its almost like the far-left works hand-in-hand with Republicans to ensure that they remain in power

Warren would be replaced by special election just like Ted Kennedy was. It's always a risk.

Biden picking Warren would be similar to Obama picking Biden. It's a safe pick aimed a reassuring the base with respect to the nominee's perceived shortcomings. But there are other picks that would do more for the party as a whole and set up the future.

That said, VP Warren + Senator Pressley would be a pretty good net gain from all this.

Would the Republican Governor be able to place the seat until the special election.

Here are the rules I've found:
https://www.ncsl.org/research/elections-and-campaigns/vacancies-in-the-united-states-senate.aspx

In 2009, 12 of the states that currently permit the governor to fill U.S. Senate vacancies by appointment considered legislation to take away that authority and require a special election instead. Connecticut and Rhode Island passed legislation along these lines; in Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, and North Carolina, the bills failed to pass. In Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania, the bills carried over to the 2010 legislative sessions. In Massachusetts a bill was passed iin response to the death of Senator Edward Kennedy and his request that the current law be changed. Previous law in Massachusetts called for a special election to be held, but not until five months after the vacancy occurs. The new law retains the special election, but permits the governor to appoint a temporary successor in the interim.

By my reading, if Warren stepped down at the beginning of the session, there would be a special election in June 2021. If she stepped down right after the election, that special election would be in April 2021.

It would make less than no sense to have Warren as VP. She's another old white person.Plus, she had basically zero black support during her campaign. There's no chance for Trump to win MA. So, that's not a reason either. On top of that her first position of taking away private insurance will be hammered home in hundreds of millions of dollars in attack ads.

Sounds like a great pick. If she distracts that much criticism away from the presidential candidate, she has helped him win. People will be voting for Biden vs Trump. They don’t give a shit about vp.

uh, medicare for all is pretty popular in general and even more popular right now

if any warren's social welfare positions would help to make biden less of a liability on the campaign trail

remember, it's about building the base. there aren't many swing voters anymore. this campaign is about getting as many democrats to the polls as possible. that's the route to victory in 2020.

Agreed. Do you think Warren will get as many dems to the polls? Is there a VP who could get more people out?

Warren's message in these times is badly needed and she really worked hard on the campaign trail. She just couldn't gain any traction after the "how will you pay for it" fumble. I worry that Biden's conservativism around issues like health care and debt relief is going to turn a lot of voters off, particularly younger voters and Latino voters who are getting absolutely destroyed right now economically and socially. Warren's progressive message will help generate the excitement to get some of those folks to the polls and her commitment to building institutional power (e.g., CFPB) will help sell a progressive message to more moderate voters in demographic groups that aren't particularly enamored with Biden. Just my two cents, though.

Typically the best VP pick is about getting voters to the poll in a specific state (esp. swing state) rather than nationally.

So having someone with virtually no minority support in the ticket is a "great idea". Maybe for Trump it would be.

That was arguably the strategy last time but VA was basically already in the bag and what’s his name did nothing nationally.

Do you pick Klob to seal up MN and maybe help in WI? Do you go straight for Tammy Baldwin or Gretchen Whitmer who is already going toe to toe with Trump?

She would make a huge splash, that's for sure

Oh, you're just so witty! And the guy who narrowly beat her after purging the voting rolls is doing so well - reopening Georgia beaches over the express objection of local officials, telling a press conference that “Finding out that this virus is now transmitting before people see signs … we didn’t know that until the last 24 hours" when the CDC (located in his own state!) had already given just such a warning weeks earlier. People may get sick or even die because of his idiocy. But hey, you got to own the libs again, Angus!

People are going to die in Wisconsin today. Biden was not a very responsible voice saying it was safe to vote in person. I won’t be more inflammatory than that.
