October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in that month, the Demon Deacons will be taking on two tough rivals at BB&T Field. October 8th, against Florida State and October 15th, against VA Tech. I am hoping and asking Deacon fans to PLEASE GO PINK for both of these games. Wear black and gold to show your support for DEACON Football, but PLEASE wear some sort of PINK clothing or the symbol for BREAST CANCER at both games for someone who is fighting, is a survivor or has passed away from breast cancer. Thank you! Go Deacs!:heart:

phan beat me to it...should be easy for our student section.

Is there any doubt that the Susan B Komen foundation and the others advocating awareness for breast cancer have done some of the best lobbying in the world?

An entire month devoted to their campaign? Getting all the NFL players to wear pink for an entire month? And everything else... There's a lot of things out there that kill but for whatever reason, breast cancer awareness has dominated in the public sphere.

Disclaimer: This in no way is me attacking the foundation and awareness movement but just impressed by what they've been able to accomplish. Probably some very good case studies on the topic.

It's the least we can do for all the awareness women's sports have raised for prostate cancer.

When you think of what the NFL and college sports could do for awareness of prostate cancer and other men's diseases, you have to think there are many missed opportunities. Instead, we just get a bunch of Viagra/Cialis commercials.

Women sports should raise awareness for all the throat cancer out there.

Boobs and football are a match made in heaven. Also, impotent men who get their jollies from watching real MEN.

nonny=Keeper?

I think we're starting to see the signs of fatigue with this breast cancer awareness stuff.

This is very very true. Breast cancer has a survival rate of 90% these days. That is astronomically high. If you don't want to go get your breasts or prostate checked in this day and age than you should have no one to blame but yourself. Its similar to eating shitty food, you get HBP, Diabetes, Heart risk you have no one to blame but yourself. This false notion that breast cancer or prostate cancer needs more money for research just isn't true. We need research for things like lymphoma, lung cancer etc...

So if you eat a bunch of shitty food and suffer from related illnesses you have no one to blame but yourself, but if you get lung cancer you should be lobbying for more research dollars?

No if you get Breast Cancer and don't get screened regularly and you develop advanced stages of cancer where the survival rate drops from 90%+ to 50% then you have no one to blame but yourself because by now everyone should know diabetes bad, high blood pressure bad, screen for prostate cancer, screen for breast cancer. That was the analogy.

There's no marketing angle in promoting awareness in your constituent and target demographic. But the NFL knows how sweet they look to the one-game-a-year female viewers who think it's endearing that the NFL cares so much about something that affects them (and a small percentage of men too). It's all about increasing viewership. You could promote anything and men are going to watch- it doesn't matter. Even moreso when you consider the almost innate reluctance men have in going to the doctor for anything much less junk-related.

There are a ton of female NFL fans. The numbers I've seen are that women make up 44% of NFL fans. Breast cancer awareness is somewhat marketed toward them, but so are Brady, Sanchez, Rodgers and the hot QB of the hour.

The amount of advertising that is done for this is maddening. We have had a whole month at work dedicated to this bullshit. Where is the support for prostate cancer?

Not that I think either of these causes need anymore support. They are very survivable if you aren't a dumbass.

I agree that this money should be spent elsewhere and on better causes. Like hell will I ever donate any money to Komen.

Guess I would debate what constitutes a "fan." It's no coincidence that 44% (assuming this is accurate which I find very arguable) of NFL fans are female and the league has become increasingly "feminized." Tom Jackson's weekly observations on this issue are but one of many veteran opinions of what's happened to the NFL since it "got in touch with its female side."

But kudos to Godell and Company. They're a billion-dollar+ a year institution and they know how to market their product to people who really seem less interested in the game itself and more the glitz, glamor, and social aspects. It's turned off a lot of more traditional fans, but who gives a shit- we're all older and going to die first anyway.

I'm seeing more women with lap tops, pads and mobiles checking out their fantasy football teams stats each Sunday. Just an observation.
