New coaching search thread

Man, I really wish OldTrenchFighter and his photoshop skills were still around. He would have made this thread priceless.

RIP.

Netflix and chill is pretty solid with photoshop but not as creative yet. Shows promise to be an all time great though.

This all reminds me of the last time we haired a basketball coach-- lots of great rumors, lots of great candidates and then DFL walks off the plane and up to the mike-- Wake fans just get strung along and then Boom! we get a crappy coach

After discussing it with Murdock, we think this is who the guy in the blue sweater was http://wfuogb.com/2016/04/meet-richard-carmichael/. Again, he was waiting on the tarmac for the plane to arrive. Murdock only saw three people come off the plane, so Matta could've been on there.

So, after 3k posts about the coaching search we sent the 1 guy to Reynolds to spot Matta who didn't know what Matta looked like? "just a bunch of olds"? This is hilarious. btw- carmichael is a math prof at Wake, i had him.

OK - here's my analysis

Kevin Keatts (UNCW) --> I would be skeptical about this hire, but back-to-back top finishes in the CAA and NCAA Tournament trips gives him the edge over Wes. It's close, though. It's worth noting that Keatts's best season was his first, he's only made the NCAA Tournament once, and hasn't finished top-5 in the conference since his first year. I'm not sure if I would be happy with that situation if I was a state fan.

Josh Pastner (Memphis) --> Awful hire, though I think that was acknowledged at the time. Pastner came with a ton of recruiting baggage and was kind of a desperation hire, iirc. Honestly, Memphis is probably a better job than GT at this point in time. This is a Tommy Amaker and Jeff [Redacted]-caliber hire, imo.

Chris Mack (Xavier and Louisville had a title in the last few years) --> Mack is dope. He was coming off of 5 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a final four, elite 8, and sweet 16. We don't have a candidate at this level, imo.

Jeff Capel (Duke associate head coach) --> Capel was definitely viewed by many as one of the top recruiters in NCAA basketball and K's protege, so I think this is also in a different class of coaches than anybody in our pool. It seems like he's a better bag man than head coach, though. We don't have this kind of candidate this year and, to my knowledge, usually don't bring in top assistants as coaching candidates. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Mike Young (Wofford) --> This was also viewed as a bad hire at the time, but it seems like a hire in the Forbes (top)/Kelsey (bottom) range, imo. Older guy, so he doesn't have the same potential as Wes, but proven with a decade of top-5 finishes in a shitty conference. That NCAA upset undoubtedly made him more attractive, though. He's only had a year and VT was a mess, so I'm withholding judgment on how this one will turn out.

Danny Manning (Tulsa) --> Puke. Tulsa was 10-12 (27-28 in two years) before the team won 11 straight including the conference championship before losing in predictable fashion to a pretty mediocre UCLA team in the NCAA Tournament. Lots of lucky bounces that year for Manning and the Golden Eagles and we certainly paid the price for it. Manning actually looks a lot like Ryan Odom in hindsight, though obviously had name recognition and bench experience in Kansas that made him more compelling.

Jim Christian (Ohio) --> I still don't quite understand what Boston College was doing with this hire. Christian was garbage in his last two stops, though he had a nice run at Kent State. Definitely a Manning-caliber hire in terms of his most recent stop at the time and a [Redacted]-caliber hire given his career record.

Our shortlist list reminds me of the following: Odom (Manning), Miller (Keatts), Forbes (Young), Kelsey (Brownell), Matta (somewhere between Larranaga and Mack). Forbes and Matta are my preferred candidates; Kelsey and Miller are next tier; I don't want Odom at all.

Keatts is a smart guy. I wish we had him.

Or you could talk about the fact that for a year I've telling anyone who would listen Goodman's $18M($15M) numbers were bullshit. And it came true.

What Babydeac said was they were firing him for cause which set a goal of $0. Nothing with what Babydeac posted.

Good lord. How many times can one man be wrong?

There’s a new boss in town.

Y'all, Carmichael is, or used to be, the faculty representative to athletics. Not sure if that's still the case, but would make sense

I bet all of you who jumped on Les' ultra exclusive content behind that paywall feel like you got your monies worth today.

We didn't send him. He answered the call. Props.

Damn I love this shit, hope we're all not disappointed at the hiring announcement. Matta lets do this shit... Bring the pain!!!! Still want be disappointed if its Forbes but anything else might be a let down... However, several dudes on here have got me slightly interested in Turner....

Anyone who buys the narrative that Amaker was on campus but didn't interview for the coaching job is a fucking idiot. IF he was here, he interviewed.

All of this interest tracking planes but we haven’t built a gym for our basketball team in 80 years. WTH is wrong with us.
