Non-Political Coronavirus Thread

This thread has been a really productive place for discussion. Please try to keep the political stuff on the Tunnels.

It's objectively true that Republicans are less likely to not adhere to wearing masks/social distancing than Democrat voters.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/02/health/coronavirus-face-masks-surveys.html

Of those polled by Gallup, 75 percent of Democrats said they had worn a mask in public, while 58 percent of independents and less than half of Republicans said the same.

Democrats were far more likely to live in counties where the virus has sickened and killed more people, while Republicans were more likely to live in counties that have been relatively unscathed by the illness, though they were paying an economic price. This contributes to the conflicting partisan response to the pandemic, including how to reopen businesses and whether to take extra precautions to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Other research suggests the gap between Democrats and Republicans on mask use may be narrower. According to a Democracy Fund + UCLA Nationscape survey, 92 percent of Democrats said they had worn a mask compared with 79 percent of Republicans. Data was collected between March 19 and May 20.

Update on my daughter. Things got ugly last night. Her abdominal symptoms got way worse. She hasn't eaten since Sunday night. She has terrible cramping and blood in her stools. She can't walk across the room w/o passing out. We had to send someone over this morning to knock on her door b/c she wouldn't answer her phone. We were kind of freaking out. We finally go a hold of her and she is OK but really feeling bad. We are concerned she is getting dehydrated. We finally decided to call an ambulance to take her to the hospital to get fluids. She can't drive herself and we can't ask her roommates to drive her. That is all happening now.

We really want to go down there but know they won't let us in the hospital or near her anyway. Hopefully they just give her fluids and send her home.

As a parent, this is horrifying. Thank you for sharing it all with us, and hoping for the speediest recovery possible.

Definitely not fun dealing with this from a distance. You feel so helpless.

She was a new child after receiving fluids, zofran and something from the stomach cramping at the hospital. They were still evaluating her and, depending on her lab results, will likely send her home this afternoon... For someone else that asked, she is 23, healthy and in good shape - but does have a terrible diet, doesn't drink enough and, as a result, has a history of stomach issues and low blood pressure anyway.

I am glad she got treatment, sounds like she was entering a bad cycle. Basically she feels awful so she doesn't eat or drink, which in turn makes you feel worse, and so you don't eat or drink, and you then get even worse and on and on it goes, abdominal cramps intensify as your stomach acid builds up, you get stomach bleeds especially if you are taking NSAIDs on an empty stomach. When people are sick they need more fluids and more nutrients as the immune system is in overdrive and your body is just turning out cells and other metabolic stressors.

Glad things are getting better. Man, that is scary stuff.

good news...

Asymptomatic coronavirus transmission appears worse than SARS or influenza — a runner can leave a ‘slipstream’ of 30 feet

scooter, I hope your daughter gets well soon. Have her lie prone as much as possible. What I learned from this virus and George Floyd is our more of our lungs lie along our back than our front, so lying prone takes weight off of them. I would imagine the hospital gave her breathing exercises to do. If not, there are some on youtube.

thanks. Though, so far, she has had no respiratory symptoms at all. Surprisingly, the doctors at the hospital thought she might not have corona - and they were taking no special precautions with her. I guess because she has no respiratory symptoms and her fever is better? Don't they read the same stuff we do? A significant percentage of patients have no respiratory symptoms... I guess we'll find out when her test comes back.

In all seriousness, I really don't get why mask-wearing has become a political issue or is associated with 'freedoms' or 'rights' in any way. Why do people have a problem with being asked (or required) to wear a mask? Why is it such a big deal? I guess people are just like children - if you tell them not to touch something all they want to do is touch it.

Because Trump doesn't want to wear a mask. That's 95% of it.

Yes and no. He’s emblematic of the toxic masculinity that leads some people to think wearing a mask is evidence of weakness.

...and worse, the dreaded librul notion of political correctness.

Which is viewed as a kind of weakness.

I don't want to wear a mask because it's inconvenient and makes it so I can't see other people's faces. Wearing a mask is not a default position for me. I don't want to do it.

Am I doing it? Yes. Do I perceive it as a burden? Yes. Do I want to wear it as little as possible? Yes.

color me shocked that Knight immediately jumped in to defend toxic masculinity.

I work in a hospital and wear a mask 8 hours a day, and every staff member I see and patient I treat are wearing a mask as well. You get used to it. You'll be fine.

I had no idea that BBD and Rafi were MDs or practicing physicians before this thread.
