2022 Atlanta Braves Season Thread: off season decisions loom

Why not send Hechavarria? That dude is a liability.

Is this serious? It’s for defensive purposes where he is head over heels better than Camargo.

On another note, I’m starting to seriously worry we may miss the playoffs entirely.

Serious. Who cares if he is a little better of a middle infielder? He couldn't hit a watermelon. Camargo isn't very good as a middle infielder, but pretty good at 3rd and can play outfield if needed. He isn't a consistent hitter, but at least has a good game here and there. Unless Albies is going to DH and Swanson is hurt, then Hechavarria is as useless as a screen door on a submarine.

Being a good backup middle infielder is pointless for a team that needs to score 10 runs to win.

Completely agree with deacdixieboy on this one. Hechavarria is much more solid defensively and just about as dependable at the plate. Camargo is currently at .200/.244/.367 compared to Hechavarria at .244/.279/.293. Not worth keeping Camargo around just on the hope he'll hit one of his rare home runs.

I'm also worried about hanging on over the last 18 games. Our starting pitching is an abomination right now. Really need for Hamels to return with at least average effectiveness, Anderson to maintain his level of performance and for one of our others (Wright, Folty or Newcomb) to get their head out of their ass and at least be serviceable. That's too many ifs and maybes for me to be comfortable that we hang on to make the playoffs.

In the NL, in order to not make the playoffs, we would probably need to fall to a couple games under .500. Currently, the 8 seed in the NL would be the 20-22 (0.476) Rockies.

The Braves are currently 24-18, so that would probably look something like going 4-14 or worse, to end the year at 28-32 (0.467). I'm as skeptical as any about the current SP dilemma, but it would take an epic collapse to not make the playoffs. Only getting 4 wins out of 5 games against MIA, 4 games against WSH, 3 games against BAL, 3 games against NYM, and 3 games against BOS would probably be the worst collapse to not make the playoffs in a long long time.

I'm expecting yet another first round loss so I'm not getting bothered by the thought of missing the playoffs. If Hamels comes back decent, we might make it to the second round.

If we win the NL East, we will likely have the worst record of NL division winners (3 seed). This means we would match up against the 6 seed in the first round, which almost certainly means we avoid the Dodgers, Cubs, and Padres. With our hitting, I think we could get hot and win a 3 game playoff series against literally any of the other teams, regardless of the SP being mostly patchwork bullpen and Fried.

If we lose the East, losing in the first round is a much more real possibility given who we would play and the current state of things. Regardless, my main point is that this isn't a normal year, there will be a lot of mediocre teams in the first round of the playoffs, so winning the first round is a much lower bar than normal.

The Braves schedule the rest of the way is super easy:

- Marlins
- Mets
- Nats
- O's
- Red Sox

Virtually impossible for the Braves to fall out of the top 8, even if they are counting on Tom Milone.

What’s everyone complaining about? The easy fix to not having any MLB quality SPs is to score 29 runs.

That was amazing. Can't believe Duvall hit that slam.

Very nice to see Ozzie hadn't missed a beat. And Wilson looked a bit shaky, but effective in long inning relief. Bet he gets a chance to start next week.

I don’t get it with Touki. Dude’s arm talent is elite, his breaking stuff is elite (curveball, splitter), and yet this always happens. He consistently falls behind hitters early in the count, and then he either walks them or throws picthes right over the middle that get hammered. It’s gotta be a mental thing with him, because I really don’t think his control is necessarily that bad.

I mean he has a 4.45 BB/9 in the minors over the course of his career so his control could certainly use some work.

I mean I’m not calling his control good by any stretch. But he flashes good control in spurts. With runners on base or behind in the count, he just loses the ability to throw good pitches and either misses badly or leaves it over the middle.

Well he's gotta be done for the year. Probably keep him on the roster for middle relief. Hamels back tomorrow and Fried on Friday is huge. Fried, Hamels and Anderson should have a solid chance at a postseason series win with our offense. I also think you've gotta give Folty another shot at some point, if the reports about his increased velocity are true. He's been "the guy" before, and he can't be any worse than Touki/Milone/Ervin/Tomlin lately.

I keep wondering, in the back of my mind, would King Felix opt back in if he's been staying in pitching shape and finally wants a crack at the postseason? Chances are probably slim to none.
