VT @ WF — Saturday 3:30 RSN

Most VPI fans I saw on social media today were complimentary of Wake and angry that they shot themselves in the foot . . .

Saying VT shot themselves in the foot as these Virginny writers and tweeters do misses the mark. A balanced take is that WF’s defensive pressure against a team accustomed to big offensive numbers affected their composure leading to lack of discipline and penalties.

Wake designed the defense to play for the run and stop the run and make the VaTech QB beat Wake by passing. That strategy kept the nation's leading rusher to less than half his average yardage.

And Nick Andersen had Hooker's number in the passing game.

Most VPI fans I saw on social media today were complimentary of Wake and angry that they shot themselves in the foot. Oddly the only real spot I saw complaints about officiating was from journalists. It's doubly odd because even if you think Wake got a couple calls in the first half, VPI undoubtedly got a few calls in the first half that were dubious at best. I didn't think officiating impacted the game for either team beyond just being inconsistent across the board. There was a blatant target that went unreviewed in the second half on VPI.

How do they figure they "shot themselves in the foot"? They just got beat by a team that was well prepared and played well.

It’s a great gameplan that we should use going forward. Stack 10 in the box to stop the run and Andersen intercepts anything thrown down field. And, if anyone gets past the line of scrimmage running, Andersen just tackles them, too.

Nick was tied for second with several VaTech receivers in catching passes thrown by Hooker.

I mean, they out gained us in yards (433-316) and first downs (28-17), and time of possession was basically even, but we beat them because of Anderson’s picks and their two missed field goals.

Our defense stopped their offense. Kahlil Herbert was averaging 240 all purpose yards per game. We held him to 87. And he was averaging 148 yards per game and almost 10 yards a carry. Our defense help him to just 64 yards, 3.4 average.

Shooting themselves in the foot implies that we only won because they played bad and made stupid mistakes. But we outplayed them where it mattered.

I agree with all that. But they gained basically as many yards as they did against BC (435 yards in that game) and scored 40 points in that game vs 16 against us. So I can kind of see where VT fans are coming from blaming the missed FGs and the picks.

Part of Wake's defensive philosophy is to force opponents into double digit plays long drives. Don't give up big chunk plays. The thinking is that few teams can do that without making mistakes that will stop them.

That is what beat VaTech. Some of the mistakes are small and subtle, like a missed blocking assignment that allows a sack or tackle for loss. Some are big and obvious, like Nick's picks.

Most teams are not disciplined enough to make drives like Wake's 17 play 75 yard drive that ended in a touchdown. With Clawson's developmental program working well and the long pipeline from three star recruit to NFL player pretty full, very few teams can beat Wake on just talent difference.

The way Wake played against the two teams from Virginia as opposed to the way Wake looked against NC State shows how much of a difference preparation time and coaching can make.

they ran for 350 yards vs. BC and 210 yards vs. WF; that is the difference

if you're rushing for 350 yards you are not going to throw interceptions because...you don't need to throw the football

Their fans and our fans are making the same argument but from their own perspectives. We're talking about the bend but don't break D. They're talking about the missed FGs. They're talking about Hooker throwing picks. We're talking about Andersen making the picks. Same thing, different perspective. They say they shot themselves in the foot. We say our defense stonewalled them.

The yardage totals in the wake Virginia Tech game are kind of misleading because the last three possessions wake had was just trying to burn clock and didn't throw a pass.

All true. Add in the penalties and VPI had a bad day, not all of which they can blame on themselves. Good teams make other teams have bad days.

Liberty just outside the polls this week at #26. Will be interesting to see how they match up against VT when they play next month.
Aren't the Deacs scheduled for a trip to Lynchburg in the next year or two?

I think anytime a team has 2 missed FGs (granted one was 50+ but just wide and had the distance) and 3 INTs with 2 of them in the redzone you consider that shooting yourself in the foot especially when you outgained the other team by 100+ yards. Yes it may have been due to some scheming by our D knowing we would rather risk Hooker passing mistakes vs. being run over, but the reality is even a poor QB should avoid 3 ints in any game especially when on 2 occasions you had points to be had if you just make the conservative pass and don't try to go deep down field. Poor decision making by Hooker and will be interesting to see if they give another QB snaps going forward who is a more accurate passer otherwise a lot of teams will follow our formula and make Hooker beat them in the redzone with his arm.
