WFU Hoops: '21-'22 Roster Construction Thread: +LaRavia/Taylor/Walton/Monsanto/Williams/Sy/Marsh

I think this whole process has shown that Ody is a bit of a flake. in the long run to turn this thing around, we need a whole roster of 100% committed players who do not have any flake tendencies.

Well these are 18-23 year old guys. Coaches get paid big bucks a flaky demographic in committed winners.

So we've gone from Ody being the punchline as low-rated recruit ... to Ody was surprisingly better than anticipated ... to Ody's a valuable player to ... it really sucks to lose Ody ... to Ody lacks class and is a flake? Got it.

The guy was recruited by one particular coach and played one year for him. That coach was fired and he had no say in who his new coach would be. Regardless of anything else, if the guy that recruited you and who you committed to spend most of your time with was gone (as well as most of the guys you signed up to play with), it's not unreasonable he may want to reassess his choice. He gave an interview yesterday saying,
“The main things I'm putting into my decision will be that player coach relationship,” he said. “I'm just trying to see the best fit for me as well as the relationships, atmosphere of the school, and culture within the program.”
Maybe he and Forbes just never fully connected.

I doubt any of them have fully connected with Forbes due to COVID. It is what it is.

Sucks to lose Ody, had a good motor, and that was needed amongst the Manning recruits. But, to blame fans and culture that was created by the guy that recruited him makes no sense. I doubt Forbes wanted him around anyway, if he didn't want to compete for minutes. That's part of the crappy culture to begin with.

I thought I saw a video of Forbes, before game 1 last year, talking about practice and defense where Forbes said:

...this guy this...that guy that...needs to limit turnovers...needs to make shots...needs to run the right plays..."but Ody can defend all 5 positions" or something where Forbes praised Ody as a very good defender - it was very supportive.

Almost like, instead of a problem or weaknesses, Forbes knew Oguama was solid.

This is a real loss for us and we will miss the guy. The "culture" garbage, though, is just that.

Does Ody's departure put names like Tre Mitchell (UMASS) or E. J. Onu (Shawnee State) on Wake's radar?

Can't ask these questions on here. You need to go pay and follow Lee's recruiting thread if you want this kind of info, or so I'm told.

I doubt we are involved with either. Mitchell is putting out a list today I think I read.

Onu has been on my radar for a couple months, or whenever he entered the portal. I made a post about him previously. He has a lot of big programs after him, if he does indeed to stay in college. My gut tells me we wouldn't be in the running for him either, but who knows.

It's unfortunate that the "insiders" who used to post here seem to not post here anymore. I had a great source at one point but don't anymore. If I pick up any info that I didn't hear on Les' site then I'll post it here, but otherwise, the scoops are on his board.

Les works tirelessly to pump out content, so I have no problem paying a little to follow his site. It's definitely worth it, because anyone in the know posts over there now and isn't going to bring that info over here. Just my $.02

It's all good. 'Preciate your scoops and creamy vibes when available.

Right - the culture was lousy when he was recruited here. So he evidently didn’t pick up on that when he was recruited, or it didn’t matter to him like it does now, or something. But nothing Manning or any of Manning’s recruits did helped to change the culture at all.

So ironically Ody’s leaving just as the culture has a hope of getting better. Thus I would hope that that wouldn’t be his go-to excuse, as it just doesn’t hold water. The players and coach establish the culture and the fans respond to and perpetuate it. Some introspection is due.

Anyway - good luck Ody, and on to the next.

The kid was asked what he’s looking for at his next stop. He gave a fairly generic answer.

If I go to a new job, I want to be well-paid, be mentally challenged, and work with nice people. This doesn’t mean my current and pst jobs have not met this criteria.

Some people are reading way too much into an answer to a simple throwaway question.

This is a good point.

Maybe so. We as a fan base probably have some sensitivity to everything that has been wrong with our basketball program in particular, and this may cause us to infer comments incorrectly.

What I do know is I’ll just be really glad when things settle down for football and basketball, and we know who our players are and can just go out and root for them. It’s been a pretty unsettled year.

Unsettled last several years for both sports. Lots of transfers in basketball. Three of our best offensive players under Clawson left early to not get drafted and another one transferred. We’ve put some guys in the NFL but only have one star in Bates.

Also worth noting the Childress left the program, the lone hold over from the previous staff that originally recruited him.

I called you a bitch because you bitched at a kid 1/3 your age as if he owed you something. He doesn’t.

You confirmed that you’re a bitch by invoking my sons, whom you know absolutely zero about. Just so we’re clear: they didn’t apply to WF because they had *better* options. They’ll be more successful than you could ever imagine being. They are already better men.

So, fuck you. Bitch.
Probably went to HPU. How many times are you going to call me a bitch, dude? You feel better now?

Pretty much. "Culture" is a generic buzzword used by kids and coaches alike when recruitment is involved. It's kind of like when the word "paradigm" was suddenly everywhere (has it ever left?) in the corporate world 20+ years ago. Maybe to get six sigma certified in the coaching world, you have to be able to throw the word "culture" around randomly but somewhat coherently into your sentences.
