App State

What are you looking for in reference to "quality". In 99% of professions nobody cares where you went to school once you get a job and App has good job placement programs.

Assuming, of course, that you don't care at all about the learning part.

i'm pretty young and all the App people I know really loved both their programs and the campus. they're all doing pretty well for themselves too.

We love App. Our oldest will be a Junior and youngest will be a Freshman this Fall.

App seems dope these days. If you get out of state tuition waved or reduced, and your daughter enjoys the mountains, then it’s a really solid option.

The school has massively improved in the last 15-20 years. Every App grad I know loved their experience their and they’re all doing well.

I’m also curious why she wouldn’t be looking at the Florida state schools coming from Tampa.

Unless there is a strong pull to NC, it seems like UF, FSU, or UCF would all be strong options.

Can't speak for her, but I grew up just South of WPB and I wanted nothing to do with the FL school system. It would have been like an extended high school. I visited Wake, UNC and Davidson. One step on Wake's campus and it was a done deal. Two siblings went to L-R and the 3rd went all the way to Arizona State.

PhDeac scratches head.

I think the biggest consideration for your daughter is what she wants to do post-college. If she's content with a BA/BS and plans to get a job that doesn't require a degree beyond that, and especially if she plans to stay in the southeast, App is a fine choice.

If she wants or needs more education, then depending on the field/degree, she'll basically have to be at the top of her class to have a chance of getting into a solid grad program. I am highly skeptical of the claim that going to App is a "cheap and easy way to get into an elite grad program." I would say that the biggest drawback with App is the LACK of opportunity to move on to an elite grad school. She's going to be competing for a very small number of spots with kids from the Ivies, schools like Wake, etc., and other top undergrads.

It also depends on what kind of experience she wants. I grew up in a small town in a lower-middle class family and going to WF changed the trajectory of my life and career because I was surrounded by much smarter people who worked circles around me, at least starting out, which wouldn't have been true (or as true) at a place like App. Obviously not an issue for your daugher, but you can't put a price on that kind of thing.

This might be anecdotal but I have tons of friends from App so got in to elite grad schools. Multiple are at Wake, UNC, Duke, Georgetown, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, on & on. Not everybody was at the top of their program.

Very interesting. What fields? Arts and sciences or something else? I know grad schools have gotten bigger because it's more profitable but I'm still pretty surprised to learn that "tons" of App grads are getting into grad schools like Georgtown and Columbia.

no that can't be true, inspectah the grad school admissions officer said so
