Covid-19 - Treatments & Vaccines

More important...if the hospitalization rate is significantly rising and the mandate (and presumably adherence to the mandate) didn't change...what did...? That's the relevant question.

I think that is answered by the Delta variant of the virus being so much more contagious than the prior version last year. Same reason we are seeing more breakthrough cases with the vaccines. All of the original testing and studies showing a 90-95% efficacy was comparing the original covid strain and not the new Delta variant. So now if vaccines are only say 65% effective at preventing the disease (just guesting here, I know there have been various numbers floating around), the same would seem to hold true for masks.

I'm vaccinated, my wife is vaccinated, but we've started wearing masks again and now its mandated again in Charlotte. But, it's not much of a surprise to me that masks would be less effective now than last year since Delta is so much more contagious. Still wearing a mask probably provides some benefit vs. not wearing one.

I have zero issue with parents making the decision to mask their children for school. If it helps you to sleep better at night, keep sending your kids to school masked up until they graduate.

My issue is with the mask mandate in schools. Parents should have the power to decide for their own children. Especially public school parents as their taxes fund the school district.

I am a public school teacher. I have a one year old son at home. Why is your children’s “freedoms” more important to than my son’s life?

Oh and remember, Jesus is listening.

What university administrators at public schools around the country (but especially in the SE) are doing to teaching faculty this fall is fucking obnoxious. No mask mandates, no vaccine mandates, must teach in person, no class size limitations, no additional ventilation or sanitation, must also record and post lectures on line so that students who miss class have access.

Angus doesn’t like the mandate so he is just making up shit to try to discredit it.

Hawaii has the lowest COVID death rate of all 50 states, and it's not even close. The absolute lowest, 50/50. This is despite having a higher average age than the US average and the native population of those in Hawaii having high rates of obesity and diabetes.

Point still stands?

and a constant stream of people visiting their very small area on a week in, week out basis.

My kid just started first grade and I have never heard him complain about the mask. My older kids in middle and high school have never complained about the mask. The kids don’t care, the parents just want something to complain and argue about.

This is a manufactured issue and the dimwits took the bait. The GOP lives off wedge issues

this. kids are resilient and most I interact with understand they are wearing a mask for the benefit of society and protect others as much as themselves.

with no real policy positions other than to appease trump the republican party openly and exclusively foments anger and resentment while directing that energy at made up issues. exhibit A 60+ trump election cases laughed right out of court by all manor of judicial appointees! exhibit B "jews will not replace us" in Charlottesville !! exhibit C not wearing masks is about freedumbs !!! Exhibit D mASSive voting fraud !!!! we need to prevent illegals and ineligible voters (e.g. anyone we think might vote against us) from voting !!!!!

yeah, my 5 yr old and her friends have no problems wearing masks all day, even on the playground. she understands when we have to wear them and when we can take them off. every day i drop her off at a daycare full of kids wearing masks without issue.

That was my point. Hawaii has followed the science and has, by far, the lowest COVID death rates in the country.

Yes - So why the uptick in hospitalizations if the science is being followed? Did Hawaii just stop following the science over the summer? Or are we back to blaming all of the COVID infected tourists for the spike?

We know based on data that vaccines work. Is it possible 'strict mask mandates' is a flawed policy?

Oh shit guys did you hear that the virus mutated, it’s called delta something, anyways apparently this variant is much more contagious and possibly more severe. Anyways first I heard of it.

based on the data, Hawaii is basically at median among U.S. states in terms of current hospitalizations. In other words, even though they've had a large uptick (caused by the Delta variant, which has spiked claims and hospitalizations in all 50 states), they are still performing very well relative to half the U.S.

Florida is #1 for hospitalizations currently. By a very wide margin. Florida has more than four times as many Covid-19 patients in the hospital, per capita, than Hawaii. That's a shit-ton of hospitalizations.

Is it possible they are following flawed policy?

Those damn obnoxious right-wing university administrators strike once again.

Fuck those guys. Thx pubs.

I am so tired of this shit. Kids should wear masks inside in school until they prove the vaccine is safe for kids under 16. If you don't want your kid to wear a mask, leave him/her home. Kids are getting sick and dying. What other evidence do you need?

Then, we need to mandate vaccinations. Done and done. The selfish, unvaccinated people are allowing this shit to go on straining resources and causing death where it is not necessary.
Of the 3 medical facilities in my area, 96.3% of the COVID hospitalizations are unvaccinated individuals. And when coming out of the hospital many of the shits interviewed still say they won't get vaccinated.

I'd round their asses up and throw them in a pen. Even the most dedicated health care professionals I know are tired of treating their sorry asses.
If you feel your freedoms are being so violated go live somewhere else. I for one would like to go about living the years I have left without wondering whether one of you POS will infect my ass, no matter how small the possibility is.

No. Flawed how, is it increasing the spread?? That would be the only flaw I can think of. It's binary, does it reduce the spread or increase the spread? period.

If it reduces the spread by only 3% is it flawed? 1%?

Wearing a mask is not even a real sacrifice. What are you giving up? You just don't like to be told you must do something, that's your whole argument. You imagine yourself as some kind of freedom fighter, some Reagan-esque champion of rugged individualism or some shit. Besides being ridiculous, it is fucking dangerous. Don't be an asshole.

the National Guard will be deployed at some Georgia hospitals tomorrow to help manage the overflow situation in ICU's and ER's.
