Wake Forest Football Recruiting

Seen a ton of recruits there today walking around the concourse. One was decked out in Wake gear.

How many scholarships do we have left? Are we targeting any big names? Feel like there has been radio silence lately. 5-0 start certainly helps.

would be shocked if they picked up more than 3 other in this cycle before January. Numbers are tight and they don't oversign, this wont be a 22-25 sized class. More like 15-16 before they see how transfers pan out

I couldn’t keep up with the names on their recruit tags. The one decked out in Wake gear was Thomas Hunter. There was also a set of brothers there that looked really young.

You got that right.

Agreed. We’ll take loyal Deacs wherever we can get them. James has been here forever.

If we made a good push this year, there are so many people who would gladly hop on the Wake bandwagon to see how we’d fare against the big boys.

Inside the battle for Tar Heel State talent: Can anyone slow down ‘the train that’s rolling at Carolina?’ https://theathletic.com/2867484/202...lling-at-carolina/?source=user_shared_article

Interviews with 10 NC high school football coaches about NC recruiting. They don’t ask specifically about Wake and Duke like they do about UNC and State. The coaches talk positively about coaches Lineburg and Higgins.

But I’ll tell you, the most underrated group out of those four is Wake Forest; those guys just do a really good job. They’ve done a really good job of getting those two- to three-star kids and coaching them up. That’s the one thing they can sell; they’ve done a good job the last few years getting the most out of their talent.

I don’t think Wake or Duke do a bad job at all; it’s just harder to get into those schools, private schools, so their pool’s a little bit smaller.

Coach 4: My school is a little different because of the academics, so all four recruit my school very equally. They all contact me. I mean, Coach (Dave) Clawson, he always reaches out early. Duke and Wake always contact me due to the fact that academics are as key as their (recruits’) athletic ability, to some degree. The one that probably does it least is NC State, just from a coaching aspect.

Coach 6: It’s cyclical. Right now, North Carolina really does the best job, with NC State being a close second. Their recruiting pool is a little wider, as far as kids they can get into school. Duke and Wake Forest are probably a little more handcuffed by academic requirements than the two public schools, so it almost is a different recruiting philosophy.

Coach 7: Mack Brown and those guys are doing a good job right now. When he first got the job, he made sure that he went to every high school in the state. I personally think Wake Forest does a good job, believe it or not. They don’t get as many in-state school kids, I think, just because of the academics, but as far as recruiting my school, I have as much contact with the guys at Wake and Duke, maybe even more than the guys at Carolina and State. I think Carolina and State sometimes take things for granted, and Duke and Wake know they have to work a little harder — and I think they do, though their rosters may not show that.

Assistant coaches, I don’t know that one stands out. I’ll tell you what, I know it’s a weird direction to go, but I love (Wake Forest associate head coach) Kevin Higgins. I just think he’s really good, and he’s a quality human being. He’s very well-prepared when he comes in.

Kevin Higgins at Wake Forest, he’s been a head coach at The Citadel one time, so he’s an older guy and does a good job recruiting, and we have a good relationship with him.

My guy at Wake Forest, Wayne Lineburg, he really does a good job. Sometimes it’s a hard sell at Wake, but he does a good job of checking in, inviting them to camp, inviting them to basketball games. He does a good job keeping up with it.

Wake Forest and Duke, those two never mention anyone else.

Yeah, my takaway was more positive. Brown can't help but bowl them over with the lower academics, etc. It's just a much easier sell. But these HS coaches are very aware that WF is selling very well with a better product in one respect-academics.

FWIW, Kevin Higgins could not be a nicer more humble guy. Not surprised that he is well respected among HS coaches.

Shoutout coaches for admitting Wake is a much better school than UNC.

Clawson will get a bump from this year, every time he is mentioned its effusive praise.

Good evidence that academics still matter quite a bit in our recruiting strategies and who we end up enrolling

Exactly. It does nobody any good for the staff to recruit and enroll guys who drown academically before they finish a year at Wake.
