Non-Political Coronavirus Thread

just learned that former neighbors of mine, both vaccinated, contracted Covid-19 and passed away in the last 10 days - he in a hotel and she in the hospital, 2,000 miles from home.

He was a Vietnam vet (at least 70) with medical conditions, so not a commentary on vaccines, more of a "well, that really sucks" observation

why'd they have to go and pick the most insignificant of the greek letters for this variant?

If it makes you feel better, it's probably been there for a little bit and is likely in most states that have a real population.

It doesn't make ya feel better when we had a 10 day trip planned for SF at the end of the month, or more specifically, it doesn't make my wife feel any better.

Yeah that’s the correct answer. The sequencing capacity in the US while getting better and way better than the start of the pandemic is really lacking, among many other things. There was essentially zero capacity before the pandemic at the state labs to do NGS. Also this was most likely only caught because it was flagged for sequencing because of travel history. If you left it up to random chance then a certain threshold would need to hit for circulation before finally being detected. If you are looking and don’t target it will take awhile, like the most recent epi calculations put Omicron emerging somewhat late Sept to early October.

She should get vaccinated and then boosted in 6mo.

Had Covid last October (2020), got the vaccine in March, and just got my booster today (didn't want to risk having ill-effects at the game on Saturday). I got the flu vaccine as well, but unfortunately I don't think that will cover me this weekend if the Pittsburgh people are as sick as their players.

One thing I was wondering about people complaining that their arm is super sore afterward: Do you think you were tense when you got the shot? I don't even mind needles, and still had to be reminded twice to relax more. I'm wondering if you got the shot while your muscles were tensed if that might have something to do with the soreness.

Not I. I even worked out shoulders after my shot to reduce soreness. Still hurt for days.

Depends on the person doing the poking, I think. These pharmacists are jabbing a bunch of people each day. My first shot, very sore. Second shot, hardly at all. Third shot, sorest of all. All Pfizer shots. Like my wife says, it just depends on how good the poke is.

Because they couldn't use Xi apparently. As much of a bitch as Covid has been, naming it Xi would have at least provided some people with comic relief.

Agree that Omicron is pretty cool though. Like a Godzilla monster or some shit.

Omicron is a Decepticon or something Harry Potter has to find to defeat Voldemort.

On my first shot, she jabbed me high on the arm/shoulder, close to connecting tendons. Arm sore for a while. I asked on the second shot that she jab me mid-deltoid and that felt a lot better.
