Townie is basically right. For example, I paid for my children's childcare, so one could ask if it is fair for others to get it covered.
I think the reason I struggle more with this issue is because college graduates are, in general, in a pretty good place compared to non-graduates. I realize that is not universal, and some with debt never graduate (or they graduate for for-profit colleges). But I find it much easier to get behind supporting children, families, those with medical issues, etc.
I read a little more about this issue. It's interesting that student loan programs used to make money for the government, but now with rising debt and defaults it is a program that loses money. Even so, it would still be very expensive to erase all the current student loans, and there are other programs I would prioritize.
I still haven't found how this would work going forward. If all loans are forgiven, through any of the proposed programs, then what? We just start the loan program up again? The government gets out of the student loan program and we trust private banks?
