That's pretty similar to my experience. I started doing national and international conferences early and won a three-year national fellowship (involving lots of travel and collaboration) so my network of friends (and collaborators) is now really broad. And most of the other fellows already had jobs which meant that the depressing attrition in the field among recent graduates hasn't affected my networks as much as it usually does. Also, this early exposure really showed me how good I had it in my department despite a lot of my colleagues having bad experiences. My co-supervisors were superb and my experience was an excellent one
That's a crazy quick turnaround after comps! After our comps at the end of the third year, we take another year to write our prospectus and then 2-3 years to write the dissertation.
My cohort is all over the country, some of them already on second or third short-term jobs. The happiest are probably the ones that didn't go in the job market and stayed in the fun town to build a life
