Transgender Athletes

Just imagine if people were this outraged about poverty, shelter, health care or any actual important human need. What a world we would live in.

This is how Republicans win elections and divert attention from those issues. Convince massive numbers of people that LibDems are encouraging their kids to change their gender or that LibDem teachers are brainwashing their kids to hate themselves because they're white or that pervert men dressed as women are going to use ladies public restrooms and molest their daughters, and then profit at the voting booth every couple of years. There's always a rising minority group to be frightened of or a new social trend to be outraged about and oppose. It never ends.

Well said. Until people decide they want a better society rather than punish people for being different society will be stagnant at best.

have any of the “sanctity of the sport” folks looked at Lia’s career?

Her best pre-transition time was 4:18:72 (record time is 4:06:32)

Her best post-transition time is 4:33:24 (ladecky’s record is 4:24:06)

She lost 25 secs on her time and was ~10 secs shy of the record both pre and post transition. It seems she is just an elite swimmer.

Right. So why do we prioritize first to finish sports?

It is basic natural selection within society. Two people getting chased by a bear, who doesn't get eaten? Have to get the invasion message to the next village over, who is running it there? There goes a possum, who is running the little bastard down for dinner? Oh shit, shark, who is out of the water first?

From a natural selection stand point, humans are very poor at speed. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, Hyenas, wild dogs, wolves, bears, even sharks, all of them could run a human down on a sprint and barely lose their breath. Humans are selected to be endurance runners. We needed good vision to get a serious head start from chase predators and we need to start running well before a predator is close. In humans, natural selection rewarded intelligence (e.g. making weapons and tools to fend off predators, or weapons to take down prey) way more than speed.

Also collaboration and teamwork, which takes emotional intelligence. Point to women.

I know your expertise is birds, but as our resident shark expert I feel the need to point out that sharks can't run.

I've also heard the (perhaps dubious) claim that we evolved to run down prey over very long distances to wear them out. Probably that dumb book born to run, now that I think about it

yeah, basically the only place i've ever heard that

we evolved to make Pitbull records. that's the apotheosis

You are talking natural selection against other animals. I am talking natural selection within humans. When the lion is chasing us, I don't need to outsprint the lion, I just need to outsprint you.

My brother used this line when we stumbled across a grizzly bear a few years ago in Glacier and he bolted leaving me behind, even though running is the last thing that you're supposed to do when you see a bear. You guys wanna talk about bears? I've got lots of bear stories.

A black bear broke into my parents basement and tore the top off of their meat freezer while they were on a cruise to Alaska. He stuffed himself on like 20 lbs of steak and venison and then left bounced, and they came home to a basement full of unrefrigerated meat that had been stewing for 2 weeks in the middle of July. Their house stunk for a month.

Your parents should have bought an ozone generator and run it for a day.
